Re: What movie did you watch today?
Wouldn't rule out France just yet, Julia Ducournau's Raw looks very promising. I've seen it, and I liked it a lot. Don't go into it thinking it's going to be one of those movies with a huge bodycount. Like a lot of good horror movies it's got a great theme that the gory elements really help explore...

Re: Kong: Skull Island (2017) Trailer
Yeah, it was fine for what it was, but not exactly breaking any new ground. I wasn't bored, but I wasn't shitting my pants either. Chopper scene was really great, but just about everyone surviving the helicopter crashes unless they were pulverized by Kong was a bit too much. I also loved that breath...

Re: What movie did you watch today?
The Bad Batch - Really liked this a lot. Amirpour does an amazing job at creating this dystopian world and the characters in it. She goes out of her way to not pass judgement on her fairly flawed protagonists (and most everyone else), and although the film is getting criticized for it's lack of acti...

Re: Marvel MCU thread (civil war spoilers)
Guardians 2 was really good but probably not as good as the first. The set pieces and general cinematography were awesome. Thought a lot of the jokes struggled to land and they were forcing the humor a bit too much, especially in the first half. Kurt Russell was pretty great (and the CGI younger ve...

Re: Official European Football 2016-17 Regular Season Thread
Considering Chelsea were 10+ points ahead up until recently it was quite a run by Spurs. They had to win 9 games in a row just to get this close, but yeah Chelsea are going to take it. Would love to see Spurs sell Sissoko for half what they paid to bring him on as he's been fucking useless and bring...

Re: Official European Football 2016-17 Regular Season Thread
Spurs have been absolutely fantastic this year: undefeated at home, only lost a few games overall. Going to finish above Arsenal for the first time in years. A really stellar continuation of a solid season last year that saw them collapse at the end. I think Chelsea is probably too far ahead to catc...

Maybe? Zombieland and Dead Snow I and II are the only films that come to mind that could rival it, imo. I wouldn't necessarily rank any of them higher than the other. Rec is superior to all of the movies up for consideration.Comedy Quaddafi wrote:Y/N, anyone?Comedy Quaddafi wrote:

Somewhat fair, but they are moving through the train car-by-car like they do in Snowpiercer. It's just what I was using to describe the film generally.

It's a well done zombie movie, but it's not really adding anything to the genre, imo. It's essentially Snowpiercer with zombies.

yeah great film. very much a precursor to arrival. the spider imagery is repeated in arrival, down to the one 'jump scare' where the alien is inside a room in the military camp near the end. some of the wide frame shots call back to enemy too. also the uni prof lecturing on a subject that ties into...

1)Hell Or High Water
2)Embrace of the Serpent (technically 2015, but whatever)
3)Sing Street
4)Arrival
5)Weiner
There's a pretty big dropoff for me after these five
Anthropoid
Hunt For the Wilderpeople
Snowden
Neon Demon
Tickled
Everybody Wants Some
Eddie the Eagle
It's been a bad year thusfar.

Really enjoyed it. It's a breath of fresh air to have an alien film that doesn't follow all the cliches. Amy Adams is very strong here, she definitely carries the movie without a problem. She had a good chemistry with Jeremy Renner as well. He needs to focus on these kind of roles and not try and be...

I've listened to this album all weekend, and I think it's amazing. It's a 2016 Tribe album, so it's looking forward while acknowledging the past. It's much better than "The Love Movement", imo. It's a very cohesive album, not a collection of singles. You can tell these guys were in the studio togeth...

Re: Dave Chappelle hosting SNL deserves its own thread
Started strong, but petered out towards the end with the ask kids about Trump and Leslie Jones looking for love sketches. The election night skit was hilarious and Chappelle's monologue was strong. I don't watch the show often, but surely this was one of the better episodes this season.

Re: Green Room (Jeremy Saulnier 2016)
Liked it but surprisingly didn't love it, def not as much as Blue Ruin. The story and directions are good, the acting is good, but still it felt a little off to me. I think it's a mix misplaced expectations on my part and actual missteps by Saulnier. I feel like the implication that this is some ki...

Re: Midnight Special (Dir Jeff Nichols, Michael Shannon)
Thought this was pretty average. Definitely a Close Encounters of the Third Kind/Starman vibe that doesn't pay off, as no new ground is broken within. I did like that it just drops you in the middle of the story and you have to figure it out as you go, but I really didn't like the world on world end...

Was sad to see Leicester lose to Arsenal on a questionable red, they were going to win that game before that. I still think Arsenal is going to take the title though, they're getting healthy at the right time. Still surprised at Spurs, they've really shown that they have the patience to wait and pla...
