Re: Rap Songs That Are Anti-Rock

@ PTS, yes, perfect!

@ Scholar, those are great as well. and yeah, i'm trying to do a piece that explores how hip-hop has made a shift where it's now cool for a rapper to dress up like a rock star or wear a Nirvana shirt.

Re: Rap Songs That Are Anti-Rock

yes, king of rock is one of the biggest ones for sure.

Re: Black Thought HOT 97 freestyle

i just rewatched it. yeah, i agree. i don't think any of it was off the dome. too many complex rhymes stacked on each other, threading of concepts, cultural references, etc. and zero pauses or hesitations. just not possible to be off the top.

weird that he would say it was tho.

Re: Black Thought HOT 97 freestyle

he did an interview with jimmy fallon about it and said it was all off the top. i was beyond impressed assuming it was a written. now i don't even understand ... like i don't think he would lie about that - it just makes it go from monstrous level skill to non-human level of skill.

album is great. super grateful that artists like billy woods exist. billy is someone who i'll probably continue to better and better understand as i get older. i just finished "between the world and me" by ta-nehisi coates and now i finally understand why he called his song from the previous album "...

Did You Trade MP3s on IRC Channels?

Apologies if this is too promotional / irrelevant to most people. If so, mods, feel free to lock this. I'm Jed. Some of you may know me. I make videos, sometimes they have to do with music and hip-hop. I'm currently working on an hour-long documentary for Bloomberg detailing how the mp3 disrupted th...

Re: thoughts on this album?

very surprised by the negativity. always loved this album. even a song that is kind of bland musically like "Rock N Roll" was still super dope to me because the message was powerful. not a lot of rappers at that time took those kinds of risks ... other than dead prez's Let's Get Free, which came out...

Re: Best / Worst Free Rap Releases

And according to wiki, DatPiff was founded in 2005. Same year as YouTube. First free one online I can really remember is Camp Lo & Pete Rock – 80 Blocks From Tiffany's (2006). I think part of what helped this business model along was Danger Mouse – The Grey Album (2004). Good call! I think The Grey...

Re: Best / Worst Free Rap Releases

Basically, all the stuff that was in that first wave of 'this is a mixtape but it's all original material and is basically an album but it's free', which was around 09-10ish, is what stuck with me ^^^ Basically this Danny Brown - XXX Main Attrakionz - 808's & Dark Grapes II Earl Sweatshirt - Earl C...

Best / Worst Free Rap Releases

Free releases only. What are the best and worst releases you can think of? When do you remember the first free rap release coming out? And as a bonus, if you're an artist, do you think it makes sense to charge for music anymore (in the traditional sense) or is it just as beneficial to release it for...

when skelethon came out, i was like, oh cool, it's his best album. but the impossible kid blows skelethon out of the water. it makes me happy to see artists grow and evolve with years. his rapping is great but his production is just as good. fucking dope.
