I really think people dont listen to this album, and then just hate on it to have an opposing opinion.

The fact that nothing before it sounded like it and everything for 5 years after it was released was trying to play catch up.

The fact that people still talk about speaks volumes of how important Illmatic was/is.

If you were lucky enough to have been into hiphop at the time Illmatic came out (I was young, but had an older brother who was a big hiphop head) you couldnt help but have been blown away by it. It had "that feeling" that I dont think anything after Rakim hit had, and nothing has since. 36 Chambers ...

If it's not then its the closest thing to it.
