I like their stuff, Count of Monte Cristo was on one of my mixtapes last year. Although the album has a little filler in the mid-section. I can't for the life of me understand these guys and Lucky Soul get no attention and bands like Vampire Weekend and the Black Kids get insane blogger-props. I bla...

I actually checked their myspace because of that review. I violently despise a fair selection of the artists whose asses they lick to so I figured there'd be a chance that this might be good. Didn't like it, but it was worth a laugh considering they bash it for all of the reasons they would have ado...

I'm leaning towards that Macbook pro option. I've never used Logic though and I'm wondering if it's worth splurging on (as opposed to pirating). Really looking forward to getting back into music. I'm going to be moving away from hardcore rap beats towards something different and I've been writing al...

Yo, so I wanna buy a laptop for music production

Yo Soundlab, wassup from Commie (not really) China. I'll cut to the chase, I'm accepting a job in Asia next year which will give me plenty of free time to work on music and (for the first time) enough money to afford some decent equipment. First on the list is a laptop (since I'll need one anyways) ...

R.I.P to the (jazz)man who played my grandparents' wedding. :ohsh: Nothin' but the truth. Can't say I know the exact year they were married but it was the late 40's when he was still up and coming and playing a lot of gigs on the local scene with small bands. I asked them about the set but honestly...

Neutral Milk Hotel is probably your best bet. The Decemberists were initially called NMH knock-offs, although they outgrew that criticism pretty quickly (with good reason). Still, pretty different bands. The Decemberists are more professional/academic/nerdy, like they read about history and decided ...

Finally played the set, I'd already settled on a tracklisting before IDL posted but his shit was what I was looking for mostly. I dled those after the fact and I could have easily stretched out the funk section another 10-15 minutes with those. Special shoutout to Huldrich for reminding me to use Th...

I'm usually the one who hates on MIA/Kid Sister/etc to the point of self parody/haterism, but I actually don't dislike these guys. Dunno if they could hold my attention for a whole album but they've got my interest.

I've got some funk, Hip-Hop, danceable indie stuff, etc. I just want to keep the focus on the funk for the most part

DJ set (formerly funk a funk request thread)

Hey, I got a last minute request from a friend to do an oldschool set (which isn't my usual thing) at his house party this weekend and I'm looking for some extra "ummph" to keep it popping. So apart from James Brown and P-Funk, you guys any suggestions as far as good funk for the dancefloor (70's, 8...

Jay's only fault is "Ain't no Nigga" which isn't so much "bad" as it is a relatively poor flip on the 7 minutes of funk sample compared to EPMD/the Alkaholiks/a ton of other records. i've never understood the hate for "ain't no nigga" on this board. that song is fucking dope and was the first song ...

Follow the Leader is a better Rakim album. You really think so? General consensus would be "Paid In Full", though. Too many classic tracks. I figure I'm in the minority, but yeah I prefer Rakim's later work. Paid In Full may be the most influential rap album ever but as far as quality I think Rakim...

Liquid Swords. Follow the Leader is a better Rakim album.

The Scratch cuts on Paid in Full are painful to listen to. Would put PE, BDP, Kane, G-Rap, Run DMC's and LL's classics ahead of it too.

Voted Criminal Minded because I want this poll to be as close to a tie as possible.

9MM Goes Bang is better than 99% of the songs about guns/drugs that followed it.

Not gonna name anything that's already been said already, so I'm going to go with "Fixing a Hole" because it's psychedelic, uses harpischord and is a pothead McCartney song. Paul reached his apex when he was stoned out of his gourd. Not necessarily my favorite, but "Run for Your life" deserves props...
