Album is really good. This year is reminding me a lot of 2012 recently, which was one of my favorite years for rap over the last 5-8 years.

2005-2007 Wale was pretty dope. All down hill from there tho. yeah - I agree. I liked some of his material when he was DC-ish and rapped about shoes all the time. good call. I always felt like if he'd had an album with the right production that it would've been great. He had some good solo joints here and there, but mostly shined on collabs. One of those really unique strong voices.

I'd have to really look at the songs where he's had more percussion (I know it's not much of his solo material, but maybe a few of his guest appearances), but my sense is he generally hasn't sounded as good on those tracks. Very small sample size, I know, so it could've been a variet...

The no drum thing doesn't really bother me - I think it fits his style and voice pretty well. Track is cool, but kind of underwhelming to me in isolation, but I'm looking forward to this project.

2001-2005 was a great era of music honestly. This album was the zenith of obnoxious chipmunk soul.

Album is cool. I agree it's the best he's done since Big Doe Rehab. Much better than his last couple projects and lightyears ahead of the last Wu album. Love the amount of AZ on it too. If it had Rae it would take it to another level, but overall one of the better projects I've heard this year.

Gibbs for me. Didn't hear all of these though, gives me something to check.

Went with Gibbs. He's not an incredible rapper, but he put out the best album in my opinion and I wasn't a big fan of anybody else on the list this year.

This was pretty much the year of the disappointing album in my estimation, but that Roots record took it for me too. Not a big fan of the Wu album, but at least it has a few cuts that I will go back to or throw on some Wu mix of some kind. There's nothing redeemable about that Roots album.
