i'll defend my vote. i picked the neptunes because they're prolific. their catalog is beyond thick and they've managed to remain relevant for over a decade. they know how to write songs and they're versatile. what other producer or duo has had equal success with producing both radio friendly tracks and street shit and actually had the talent to do it well for this long?

Must admit.I thought the funeral was nice. And some of the buster stuff was ok .But the way their production got hyped up like they were super talented geniuses was laughable.Plus they ruined every jay z album they did beats on.kracker wrote:Have you heard a Clipse record?stevieebola wrote:Neptunes are the antichrist.

Bomb Squad
Dilla
The Beatnuts
Diamond D
Kanye West
Large Professor
The Neptunes
Prince Paul
Organized noise
Alchemist
Dj Quik
I cant believe that after all these years i had to put the bomb squad first. and then yancey second-- like polar opposites. but the album that walked away at parties the most was "street level"; i've got two copies on wax and three cd's in fear of not having it handy-- never did see a tape of it again.
anyone got a tape of the beatnuts first ep in good shape they'd trade?

Jay Dee's tracks were pretty much the last stand in the clubs up here before everything went south-literally. living or dead his material is flavor and adventurous.chump change wrote:jazzmatazz23 wrote:If dilla did not die he is not anywhere near the top of these lists

I agree that he could never fuck with Large Professor, Diamond D, Beatnuts, etc, but I still think that he barely makes an all-time top 20 list of producers.clark bent wrote:other than the few songs on labcabin and of course stakes is high what has jay dee ever done that would be deserving of a vote here

Just a legendary producer, any way you slice it.
This Madlib white label track that he produced circa 2000/2001 is incredible. I'd love to find an instrumental for it:

it feels like you could throw out his whole tribe and dela work and just listen to "players" and the "hate j dee" section could be over.clark bent wrote:but dont legendary producers have to make legendary albums or a whole lot of legendary beats...i just dont see it on his resume...its mostly filled with middle of the road boring hi clap crud
to call him legendary is laughable imo
its not really suprising that a dude that really didn't give two shits about industry didn't generate the proper time/resource balance to create what you'd call a legendary album. the dude did make music that a lot of talented and influencial people have been influenced by.
when you gauge industry players like neptunes or kanye its pretty fair to look at the amount of work they've put out or how long they've effectively been in business. when you look towards early influencials like pp or extra p i'd say that when they were on blast it was either you dug raps or you didn't; they weren't out there fighting for a listen so of course you heard em and since you listened to rap you probably were gonna love what they did.
quik is still fire live alchemist is raw and kanye's doin his damn thing but all this makes me wonder whos gonna bring the fire.
or can u kick it with peas porridge until infinity.
