New Devin

Post by the dead poet »

figure he's probably got an ancient thread around here somewhere but he seems to have been quite for some time so figured new thread could help.

He's got a new EP coming out on the 22nd. Here goes the first single....

Shit is dope as fuck...

Yeah, this is fucking awesome. Exactly the type of shit I want to hear from Devin.

Even though most of his latter-day releases have been messy - completely expected, considering that dude is in a perpetual weed coma - I will always check for new Devin. One of my personal favorites...though absolutely nothing is fucking with the first four Rap-A-Lot solos and the Odd Squad album.

I think the Devin backlash that happened when he put out a few of his other projects has taken over this board; hopefully it went away. I'm still a fan though and at this point, always will be. I just remember people complaining too much of what he's done lately.

Anyways, I dig this. One thing about Devin is that he is consistent with his style and always picks production that matches him well, IMO.

the backlash was kinda deserved, his last few releases weren't terrible but felt like boring rehashes of the same weed songs over and over again and the dude himself didnt' even sound like he was into making them. he was coasting to rapidly diminishing returns. this one doesn't really do anything new either but at least he sounds energized himself and that makes a big difference.

I never thought it was deserved to keep it real with you. What else do you expect from a weed rapper from the south that's comical and talks about fucking hoes? Every once in a while, he'll come up with some other concepts that will surprise me. I think if he wasn't consistent as to what he does, it would've been a bigger problem.

i don't really expect him to switch or innovate his style too drastically, but when he himself sounds bored with what he's doing and just seems to be going through the motions, the product suffers

The problem for me was that his beat selection kinda fell off for a while. I like the laid back shit but I don't want to hear a whole album of snoozers. He's still one of my all time favorites though so I'll check for anything new

Now I will admit, in terms production, he should've picked some better beats that could've topped his other efforts. Like hearing him with Premo again (depending on the beat) would've been good. Or just work with Alchemist or J-Zone some more. I say those guys because I feel they'll customized some real good production for him.

i like jzone best out of all those ideas, that could be really interesting

i'd love to see him get some shit from burn one and/or cardo going forward.

Well...10 years ago this idea worked. I'm not so sure it would work today (see bolded). I'm not so sure Primo can make another beat that even comes close to "Doobie Ashtray" in 2012. At worst it would be another mailed-in throwaway boom-bap piece of shit. At best, it would be this:

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QiQ32SBHIBc?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QiQ32SBHIBc?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

...which isn't too far off from mailed-in throwaway status.

Well its cos he became <i>just</i> a comical, hoe-fucking weed rapper the last few years. Before that he used those themes for compelling stories, unique concepts, showing his humanity etc. Now his shits as weightless as you'd expect from someone who "smokes weed, I drink brew, thats all I rap about cos thats all I do" .

Now if he made Doobie Ashtray it would actually be about running out of weed & beer after a party. And more important than any of that - he stopped being funny.

Co-sign on the KRIT and Burn One suggestions. Surprised he hasn't reached out to them by now. Hell, I'd throw in Slow Motion Soundz in the mix, too.

One thing that Premo has down when I've seen him work with a few southern artists is make the beat not as choppy sounding. Though you do hear the sample chopped up.

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fd4NLFUoaaE?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fd4NLFUoaaE?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tlgZYxJB2vY?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tlgZYxJB2vY?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5G2n-lzo9mY?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5G2n-lzo9mY?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

See what I mean? Its like those beats, you could hear the chops but they're not as obvious as other beats he's done for other folks.

For the content he has, a full project with J-Zone would be dope. Thought this song was pretty good.

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qGhVVeIihgk?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qGhVVeIihgk?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I suggested ALC because of the song off of 1st Infrantry.

yup. Pretty much no skippable tracks. JTTL and 2TX are both really good though.

He was phenomenal on Fuck You from 2001. What else are you thinking of? Seems like rather overwhelming praise to say he has some of the best cameos ever.

I don't really have an opinion on it though. Just said "no" because a few other guys said "yes".
