Future - Pluto
I know that this forum has been on a decidedly non-commercial ebb recently, but to me, this is one of the most interesting albums of the year thus far. Obviously, the guy is not going to blow your mind lyrically, but as far as style over substance hop, this shit is about as smooth as you can get - somewhere between T-Pain and Autotune Wayne, but with a style that's distinctly different from anybody else out. I can get why some might not be interested. It's definitely a far cry Ka or Billy Woods, but the fact that there's no discussion of this album at all on hip hop forum in 2012 shows a lack of range here.

Love it or hate it, it's worth discussing in my opinion.

it's well produced filler.
i wish him the best, but he's not doing anything 397 other MCs aren't doing.

Name some. I'm not saying the guy is super lyrical, but he's definitely unique.

almost everything is better than this. the beats carry him anywhere his songs go. all i hear is synths cascading from Auto-Tune Heaven all over these songs. There's all kinds of studio post-production on all these songs, I can't get much of a sense of who he really is as a rapper. But from what I DO hear, I don't hear anything I've never heard before. We must have very different brain discographies.B. Ware tha Siniq wrote:Mindbender Futurama wrote:it's well produced filler.

I ain't even trying to hate. I named an album 'Jupiter', of course I'm going to check out this guy, LOL. But it just didn't do much for me :kanyeshrug:

and there isn't one moment lyrically that made me think this guy is part of the Future of MCs instead of part of the Past...
but at the same time, as far as mainstream music goes, this stuff is slightly more creative than the average. for whatever that's worth

I don't really think Drake is wack, actually. But you get very defensive about it, so it's funny to me. But I'm not sure how you could like Drake and not like Future or Mase really. Their appeal is pretty similar. All style over substance hip hop music. End to end this album is better than Take Care though.Req wrote:good thread, tell me more about how wack you think Drake is
MB, it's probably not worth getting into with you, as we see eye to eye on plenty of rappers. But as I stated up front, I don't think this is album of the year candidate, nor do I think it's some pinnacle of lyrical anything. The notion of striping away production, and autotune, etc is silly - that's a part of the album. Artist/producer/mixer/masterer - they're all important components of a good product. But just for the sake of argument, you took all of that away, the guy's style of making music, whether you consider it rap or R&B or somewhere in between, is unique. You might not like it, and that's fine - subject matter wise and lyrically I understand there's no new ground here - but you there's not a lot out there that's similar.
It's probably the biggest commercial hip hop album out right now (if any of you listened to radio or just drove around in the city to hear what others in the city listened to you'd realize this). I'm not saying the shit is classic or even one of my favorites of the year. All I said is the album is worthy of discussion. For instance we could discuss the Dungeon Family influence, the Big Rube feature, the production - which is some of the best of the year. Whether his stylistic approach is something that will stick, go away, or catch on like wildfire (like T-Pain's use of autotune did a few years back). Whether Mike Will Made It is the next big thing production wise, etc. But, clearly none of you, except Ackbar, have actually listened to the album, so there's not a great deal to discuss.

Future and Mase are schlepps. Drake is what Shakespeare would be if he wasn't actually an aggregation of English authors.B. Ware tha Siniq wrote: I don't really think Drake is wack, actually. Future is the only rap artist since Gorilla Zoe who has done anything remotely interesting with auto-tune. Instead of just using it to fake sing or make a robot voice, Future goes in enough interesting directions with his own voice to really utilize autotune as an instrument. He also has a knack for writing hooks.
"Permanent Scar" and "Same Damn Time" are my favorites.
"Tony Montana" is the only track I think is flatout awful. It's a shame that that's the first single.

Totally, mang. Except I heard 5 songs so far. And didn't like any of them. I'm cool with it. Some stuff just doesn't move me much. If I don't like it, I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm... commonB. Ware tha Siniq wrote:I don't really think Drake is wack, actually. But you get very defensive about it, so it's funny to me. Hating is for lames and L7's. If I hear a song of his that I like, I'll jam it. For now, meh.
I don't fuck with none of Wiz Khalifa's stuff really... but that song 'Take Away'? AWESOME song to me.
that's how it is these days.

pluto's been getting a ton of spins from me, which is odd seeing as how i can probably count on one hand the amount of songs that I dig that rely heavily on autotune. maybe because the ballads on here don't so calculated or grandiose? would def like to see someone who can write just a bit better take a shot at this sound/direction/or whatever you want categorize this shit as.
favorite jams are "truth gonna hurt you" and "neva end." hella
noz's take on the album.

i have a wide spectrum of shit I can get into, but besides notable production value the album has nothing I can identify with. the songs barely hold my attention and i had to force myself to digest the songs.
not exactly the kind of record i throw on in my free time
but, by today's standards im sure this has more value than most.
