i don't think he sucks but at the same time i'm not really dying to listen to anything he does.

a friend of mine conversationally compared him to some demo you'd hear on stretch & bob in the mid 90s, I agree with that. the fact taht he raps over old obscure 90s beats only makes the comparison that much more valid.

here's the snag - the people that did this really well and stood out for it in the early/mid 90s carried gave off the impression that they actually had knowledge of some sort to impart, be it street knowledge or book smarts. this kid not so much... he often regurgitates bumper sticker wisdoms bordering on cliches without really showing much insight or an original perspective

Was sort of hoping it'd all sound more like 'Survival Tactics', but I'm still liking this a lot.

This is OK. Pretty underwhelming though. Not terrible at all, but not really feeling it that much either.

I want to download this, but all the diplomatic middle-of-the-road criticism just makes it feel like it's too much effort to take the 2 minutes I need to get it. The most positive remark about it from the last 3 posts is "solid".

your two minutes would be better spent downloading the troy ave mixtape

slick breezy coke raps over white linen crisp yacht rap beats >>> 17 yo dropping nonstop platitudes while pining for an era that ran its course before he learned to pee into a toilet over beats that were already put to much better use elsewhere

Or, alternatively, people could just listen to A-Mafia instead.

Strongly disagree. I think Troy Ave is dope but its kind of wack to compare them too just out of the blue. I like the mixtape. The only thing I could suggest for him to do is get up with someone who can make updated versions of these kind of beats for him to rap over. Pretty good start for a debut mixtape.

i won't argue the comparison is strained, made mostly because those were two nyc-originated mixtapes that dropped the same day. but i still stand by the opinion that troy ave's tape was the more entertaining of the two

^^^Yeah, I'd say let the shit marinate for a sec even though it just dropped. Haven't heard Troy's shit but I will peep. I think for me its good to see in the midst of kids that cling to the 808 bounce a little too hard, you have some in that age range who doesn't do that. I know there's more kids on this tip of going back to the 90s of hip hop but I rarely hear someone like Joey get that kind of buzz either.

wiki and children of the night/Worlds fair have been doing similar shit and getting a fair amount of attention for it. if you like this kid you'll probably like them too

whats kinda ironic here is that for years any attempt to do traditionalist throwback ny rap was met with critical dismissal, but now that it's coming from some hip young kids it's suddenly become a viable thing again.

It's only ironic given that you just meta-criticized yourself.

You're off the mark more than you're on, bro.

You poo-poo'd Antwon until the likes of Mishka and other approved internet sexy outlets started to cosign.

That whole "I'm a gateekeeper..." shit is  .

not really, it's not like i'm cheerleading for this kid while shitting on joel ortiz in another thread. unless you're referring to me rooting for guys like Ka and Roc Marci, but that's not the same thing.

eh, but you did kind of push this kid off as whatever when you compared his mixtape to Troy Ave quickly just because it came out on the same day. i dunno.....give some of this shit time to see how you like it, IMO.

i listened to both in the same day, liked one much much more than the other, and said as much. i honestly think there's a good chance you will share this opinion if you listen to troy ave's mixtape. not for nothing but right now you're defending one without having even heard the other.

i absolutely agree that there is music out there that takes time to sink in properly, but to me this aint it. it's not like this is the first time i've hear this kid either, as his buzz rises i've giving him a few tries (nh?) and none of it made that much of an impression.

well, my point is not liking one thing because you compare to another on some quick shit isn't fair. i will give Troy Ave's mixtape a listen. just didn't sound like you gave Joey Bada$$ a fair listen and then 3 minutes later you have Troy's mixtape downloaded and you're all over it. just the way your post reads really. but i will peep and let you what i think.

fair enough, if i didn't explain my position clearly that's on me. i listened to both pretty much back to back, giving them the same amount of attention, and one made a much more favorable impression than the other. granted, i'm more partial to troy than joey, not denying that in the least. but it's not like i listened to 2 bars of this kid and shut him off immediately because the other one dropped.
