The Burn One Thread

Post by B. Ware tha Siniq »

Kind of surprised nobody has mentioned (at least to my knowledge) this album yet on here. One of the best southern rap albums to come out this year in my opinion. Burn One kills the beats with assistance from his band iNDEED and it's the best work Jones has put out C.O.L.O.R.S..

You can download the whole thing free on their bandcamp.

I wrote up a review of it on my site as well, for those of you who like to read these things: http://hardwoodblacktop.com/2012/05/27/ ... phernalia/

I know R.A.P. Music is kind of undoubtedly the best rap album right now, and thus by default holds the title of best Southern Rap album of the year, but in terms of a country rap tunes relevant record, I haven't heard anything fucking with this. Much better than KD's album in my opinion, largely due to the cohesiveness of Burn One's work here.

meaning to make a thread for this. SL is decent. The beats shine through a lot more...but there's a few songs that he murders though.

I liked KD's a lot more than this. I agree that this one is more cohesive though...but I mean he did do it with only one producer so thats kind of a given.

really? I like KD a lot, but I wasn't really feeling Crown Me. I might have to give it another listen. I didn't even make it all the way through. A lot of bland beats to me. I also think I prefer SL's raps on here to KD's there, but again I may need to go back to it.

burn one is a great producer but a lot of the rappers he's been working with lately don't stack up to the beats. his instrumental stuff and old tapes with gmane and lito get much more play than most of his recent rap work

I think there's something to this, but...

The iNDEED EP is one of my favorite releases of the year, not really rap per say, but there is rapping on it.

Also SL Jones is no slouch. C.O.L.O.R.S. was one of my favorite releases of the year a few years back. His style is a little bit unusual with the kind of pitch shifting stuff he does, but he's got a lot of talent and I think he does a really good job with this album's theme. I think people should give this album another listen, shit is still in steady rotation for me.

Not to mention the fact that the production on this album and his work right now with 5PMG and iNDEED is just >>>>>>>>> right now.

This "S.L.A.B." and "Per Say," are probably my favorite three joints off this album. Listened to it again today, the album still probably is my pick for best produced of the year.

This is dope. I find myself listening to this more than G-Fluid (the only KD I have, feel free to recommend me other shit from 'em).

However, the stand-out tracks on G-Fluid > the best tracks on Paraphernalia

Still, this project overall more consistent and get more play.

Props for puttin' me on to this.

Finally got around to listening to this. I like it a lot. Burn One is a great producer, the beats (instrumentals, whatever) on this record are awesome.

"LSD" is the shit.

yeah and I understand the trepidation some folks have about some of the rappers he works with, but SL Jones is not one of those half-assed guys undeserving of his production. SL Jones has done really good work in the past as a member of Grind Tyme Rap Gang (Killer Mike), particularly on C.O.L.O.R.S.. I get that there are better rappers out there, and that he has some quirks stylistically (he does some pitch shifting type shit sometimes that I'm never too big of a fan of), but vocally I think he puts on a hell of a performance here, and he also does a really good job holding together the album's concept.

Obviously the star of the show though is Burn One and the 5PMG live instrumental work. Still one of my favorite albums of the year.

Word. I need to give C.O.L.O.R.S. a listen; the consensus seems to be that it's one of his more consistent projects. I downloaded The Number 23 last year off the strength of the Grind Tyme affiliation but it never really grabbed me and I never gave Jones a second thought until he put out the album with Burn One. The pairing with 5PMG is really solid and the whole "country rap shit" vibe that Burn One has going on compliments Jones' style very well. Pretty sure I'll be bumping this for a while.

yeah I'm not a huge fan of the Number 23 shit or that shit he did over Clams Casino instrumentals. I mean it's okay, but Paraphernalia and COLORS are definitely the best things he's done.

Should just turn this into a Burn One thread really.

iNDEEDFACE drops today... and it's dope. Should maybe be in Rick Rubin, but there's quite a bit of rapping on it, even though it's more like psych-funk rock or something. I wrote a review: http://hardwoodblacktop.com/2012/10/08/ ... ndeedface/

It's a lot like Paraphernalia, without as much SL Jones, so those of you who don't like him, but like Burn One will probably dig it. I prefer Paraphernalia on the whole, but it's close.

You can stream it on Spin.com http://www.spin.com/blogs/first-spin-in ... indeedface since I'm not sure where you can cop/download the album yet.

indeed is dope but they're better when you don't think of them as a rap act, neither of the dudes can really rap that well. they play instruments well though, sing decently, they sound tight as a band, so it adds up to a good and very unusual r&b/modern psych funk thing, but not really a good rap group. which isn't really a far cry from what you get on project where burn one works with a mediocre rapper, but at least with indeed they know enough to put their musician chops first and foremost.

yeah I definitely agree. They both try to rap, and they can pass - they're not terrible, just not that inspiring as rappers - but the music generally carries them. They don't really rap all that much, they kind of drop in verses here and there, but their music is carried by melody, harmony, riffs, etc. Ricky is pretty decent as a singer and Walt carries his weight. That aside, it's definitely a cool album. Probably makes more sense in Rick Rubin due to the style of the music, but since it's Burn One and there is rapping on it, I just figured I'd through it in this thread.

I actually really like Ricky. Walt is lyrically pretty boring but he gets the job done.

PS I just got through my first listen of it and I really like it a lot. Gonna have to sit on it a minute to figure out where it ranks in the Burn One rankings...but pretty damn solid off first spin.
