I think he's at his best when he's a bit closer to conventional. I don't know that the disconnect you note is that strange. This folk-hop stuff is a significant departure from what made Skelathon one of my favorite records ever.

they are just good friends who are big fans of each other's work and wanted to make an album together.

people are acting like this is some turning point in his career and the sound of things to come.

Not every song on this album will have that "folk'ish" feel to it!
They said that Aesop produced some songs on it, too.

Solid until the exact moment she shows up. Some people I can say "that's not for me, but I understand why people like it" but I do not understand why anybody wants to hear an adult sing with a child's voice. So incredibly unpleasant to the ears.

Hmmmm...I don't hate it but I don't think I will listen to it again, I don't think she works on that beat.

Album out tomorrow, you can stream it here:
http://www.thecurrent.org/feature/2013/ ... rst-listen

Been listening to it all weekend, can't say I like all of it, you certainly have to be in the right mood to listen to it. I think I like it though, at this point I almost feel that it's cool just because it exists, the fact that the guy who made Bazooka Tooth is doing stuff like this. I'm sure some people will think just the opposite, but if you're a fan of his it is worth listening to cause Aesop has some really good verses on here. I'd say check out 10 on 10, Teleprompters, Boomerang, and Bats.

The production on Skelethon is pretty fucking unfuckwithable. We can use Block's significant powers elsewhere.

I still prefer None Shall Pass, that has the perfect combination of beats. lots of solo aesop, lots of blockhead and an el-p and rob sonic track for good measure.

Block, when you worked on beats with Aesop for NSP it's pretty collaborative right? because the beats of yours that made his album definitely sound different, maybe more layered, than stuff you do on your own for others I think.

In the case of none shall pass, we actually ran into a lot of sample issues with my beats (shocking) so many of them were replayed. Aside from None shall pass and Fumes, all the other tracks I made had to basically be completely overhauled. Most were replayed by musicians (at least the main bass and guitar parts) and one I went in with El-p to reconfigure (No city).

Oh for sure. But i have a feeling my sampling practices might make that something they'd avoid doing.

Do people like Felt 3? I loved the first two and tried to like the 3rd a lot - but it's just never been able to hold my interest at all (and to be on topic- not because of Aesop's production.)

This is the one hip hop album in a long fucking time that has actually stood the test of time. It's definitely beyond all the other bullshit that constantly gets churned out. Great album, I might even consider it his best, I know that might heresy but whatever.
