Whilst certainly not the best run, Kool Keith did alright with his first 4 solos:

Dr. Octagonecolegyst/ Sex Style / First Come, First Served / Black Elvis/Lost In Space

i'm not too familiar with krs's career, and despite the fact that he isn't even on the poll list, i gotta ask:
is "by all means necessary" such a bad album that everybody is skipping it on the list?
i mean, "my philosophy" was the first BDP song I heard, and thought the video was dope at the time it came out.

I always thought it was his weakest album by far. My philosophy might be his best song ever though.
Kinda like , outside the three first tracks on "Follow the leader" , that album is fairly spotty as well.

No way, I'm totally with you, mang. And the OLD Common Sense is WAAY more  than the guy who just barfed some wannabe trap rap verse on Big Sean's latest number. 'Can I Borrow A Dollar?' is one of the most experimental vocal albums in that era, and barely anyone checks for it.

this was my JAM.

"Resurrection" was a classic album, but lots of people think Common's career kinda started with "I Used to Love H.E.R." and don't know about "Soul By The Pound (Remix)" or Blows To The Temple", where Com was still squeaking words when he rapped, LOL! Wow, those were the days...

"One Day It Will All Make Sense" is fucking great and has so many timeless collaborations (Common & Cee-Lo, Canibus, Lauryn Hill, De La Soul, Black Thought, etc.) and "Invocation". A hip hop prayer. And "Like Water For Chocolate" is basically all made by J Dilla, so fuck it, it's sacred.

Petey Wheatstraw kinda jumped the shark around that "Universal Mind Control" album... but his first 4, 5 and even first 6 (!) albums are ALL worthy of the time it takes to hear them... EVEN 'Electric Circus', which would have been A HIPSTER WET DREAM MASTERPIECE if it was released 3 years later. The song 'I Am Music' with Jill Scott on 'Electric Circus' is another timeless musical prayer.

He should be on the list... but whateves, I would have still voted :wutang:

He does have a formula in fairness. Wasnt Cocktails the one where he finally ran out of old school rhymes to reuse? Spice 1s like Ball & G imo, first 3 are great but the 4ths relatively patchy

Schoolly 100%, the classics are classics but I heard Am I Black enough recently enough and its amazing.

one of the worst decisions of my life was standing in a record store as a teenage child, and only having 15 bucks.

I looked at two albums I wanted but didn't have Schoolly D's "Am I Black Enough For You?" and EPMD's "Business As Usual" as I loved EPMD's singles, but didn't own the first two albums.

I bought Schoolly D's "Am I Black...?" cause "Smoke Some Kill" had a great reputation. Took it home. Listened to it. Didn't like it too much.

A few months later, I ended up getting "Business As Usual". After hearing the FIRST song, "I'm Mad", I WAS MAD THAT I BOUGHT SCHOOLLY D INSTEAD OF EPMD THAT DAY :nut:

Don't mean to shit on your nomination bid, homie... but I've never told that story, and it was something that bothered me for a long fucking time when I was young, LOLOL

It really is kinda silly to not have Redman on this list. He was one of the first superstar solo MCs from the East Coast.

Agreed. Actually I'd start withe Come Home and end with Crime Pays. SDE has a few classic songs but i prefer Crime Pays overall. There's some early '00s-type production on SDE that hasn't aged well at all.

Yeah, I actually think Schoolly's 5th album Welcome to America is one of his best, definitely better than Am I Black Enough. In any case, the last of the 4 is usually the weakest in the streak, as we're seeing.

Am I Black Enough For You? is by far the best album Schoolly D ever made. Smoke Some Kill sucks other than 2 songs.
