My point with him is that I think he's putting on an act. an act, I might add, I'm not mad at. Whether or not he's paying homage to that texas shit you're talking about really doesn't play into it. I think, at the end of the day, dude can talk like a normal human being and is hyper aware of what he's doing. There is an element of "wink wink" to all this. Why? cause I've seen him talk like a normal person on youtube clips (clips that have been removed from youtube for some mysterious reason).
I don't doubt for a second he's inspired by all the things you guys are talking about...and he's certainly committed to the role but if you think he's 100% serious, you're a fucking retard.
Honestly, I think both sides of this discussion are giving him too much credit. He's not a retro genius. He's not a hip hop Andy Kaufman. He's somewhere in the middle of that and he's just a dude having fun. He's also lucky the internet exists, but aren't we all.

I see your general; point, but how you gonna say no one from new york has heard riff raff's source material? I'm from UES NYC and I listen to screw tapes just about every day...

RiFF RaFF: "I am not a joke"

Post by Mindbender Futurama »

RAKIM WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE IMPRESSED, DAWG
RiFF RaFF accepting of comparisons to Vanilla Ice, speaks on the originality of his music.

Houston rapper RiFF RaFF found himself in a somewhat heated debate over whether or not his act is real or staged during an appearance on HOT 97 earlier this week. When asked by radio personality Ebro if the character he portrays is in fact real, RiFF RaFF revealed that while his personality may at times be “over the top” it’s completely authentic.

“If somebody’s playing around, what they’re gonna do is maybe go to the middle of the mall buy some duplicate chains. Buy some whatever that they think somebody else would buy. Me, all my songs, 90 videos, all original songs. All original beats. Now am I flamboyant? Am I over the top? Maybe…The shit I’m doing ain’t a joke,” RiFF RaFF revealed.

Later in the interview, RiFF RaFF welcomed comparisons to ‘90s rapper Vanilla Ice after stating that he looked up to the artist as a youth.

“I can remember being a kid and watching Vanilla Ice and it made me smile…I love it. I love that,” said RiFF RaFF after being referred to as a modern-day Vanilla Ice. “I can remember seeing Vanilla Ice and then through time he stopped being Vanilla Ice…This ain’t about Vanilla Ice, this about me. And I’m that one. I do trap music. I do all that shit. I do whatever I feel like doing cause it’s in my brain. I don’t got nobody writing my lyrics and that’s why I freestyle.”

RiFF RaFF quickly gained viral fame years ago thanks to a number of freestyles posted on YouTube and has gone on to appear on songs that feature Action Bronson, Chief Keef, Earl Sweatshirt, and more. Most recently, the rapper was reportedly the inspiration behind James Franco’s character in the film Spring Breakers.
How can you take YOURSELF seriously if you invite and embrace any comparisons of your rapping to VANILLA ICE??? :naswtf:

it's not a joke. the guy is talented. he's funny. he has that specific mix of ambition & mania that drives people to success. rap is what he grew up on, so that's his creative outlet. and he intentionally aligns himself with people like diplo b/c he's not stupid & realizes if he dresses a certain way, acts a fool & works w/ certain ppl he can be the "hip" version of the people blast mentioned & be more palatable for young people who take molly & listen to moombatahn. that's a persona, yea, but that's the persona he lives every minute of everyday, made up of all of his own characteristics. what rapper doesn't have a persona

it's easy for a smart person to act dumb, but it's harder for a dumb person to act smart.

that freestyle was very reminiscent of most of "Mann", which is a texas classic.

everybody needs a gimmick and he does his well, and did something interesting with it.
i'm really surprised no one has interviewed the latina stripper he used to date, her twitter is
posted on an old video of his.

dude even has his birthname tattooed on his left arm, and no one ever questions it.
then again if you ever listen to his interview on the champs podcast, you know that
he gets real childish and annoying as defense mechanisms to keep from exposing himself.

and on mindbender's concern of vanilla ice, the funny thing is vanilla ice still releases albums
and does concerts in non-major cities and casinos and lives fine off it, plus his tv appearances
he's been up to, lately. in 2013, he's probably caking off in his simple minded white people
rap concert lane than one would think.
plus, ice's grind for him to get radio play was a lot harder than people think. studio equipment, time,
vinyl pressing, and press without an internet wasn't cheap back in the 80s and 90s.
not that i care for his tunes, but he wasn't an overnight success at all.

it seems that riff's tour manager / hypeman Jackson Lagerlof, aka Tropical Vuitton, has some similarly amusing Vines.

The Meaning of Riff Raff: Why a Bizarre, Controversial Rapper Is One of Vine's Most Popular Users
When you point a camera at most people, they can't think of anything to say. When you point a camera at this guy, he can say anything.

Someone already posted that three posts up.

If you want to hear new riff verses, peep "jumping out the gym" by him and dollabillgates. It is on spotify, but you have to search for "riff-raff". Each song is 2 verses, with riff starting off most songs.

i was wondering the same thing today. then again i barely paid attention to duck season when it dropped. i think riff is moving on. he's done that with freestyle bully, then with tko capone, and now probably with most of these other fly-by-night cats throwing him cash for guest verses (ghetty, bars murre, etc.). current guy was dollabillgates, obviously, but he'll be out of the picture soon if riff stays up to his usual self.

funny that noz is how i got into tko capone, but i don't think noz likes riff raff. in hindsight, o-capone raps like an early chamillionaire maybe mixed some magno flavored punchlines most of the time.

Riff and O Capone were just recording/shooting some videos together, not sure when it's coming out, but the partnership's still happening.

Duck Season wasn't too amazing, definitely too long, but at least it had a good mp3 version of Louis Gucci.

yeah after posting that yesterday i checked his twitter feed. apparently, he shot a video for a song that has riff raff and lil debbie in it and was directed by mr. boomtown in hopes for an mtv or bet airing. and it looks like riff and capone did another video shoot yesterday.

Time and Lil Mama I'm Sorry are two of his best tracks for sure

Riff's "word of the day" segment has been a lot of fun. I think he shines when he can be silly for a minute rather than an entire interview:
