The Outfit, Tx

Post by drizzle »

These guys made one of my top 3 favorite albums of 2012 (other 2 were Roc Marci and 100s). They are from Texas, they sound like classic Houston stuff X the trippy/structurally experimental elements of Outkast's Ataliens and Aquemini X proggy 70s funk and jazz records that feature 7 minute songs with 3 min psychedelic sax instrumentals.

They also kinda make me think of what might have happened to g-side if G-side pursued the more unusual elements of Starshipz & Rocketz instead of imploding in swedish pop hooks and their own internet hype. And more directly because The Outfit's own album is also called Starships & Rockets

The album starts very Texas-y, then progressively gets weirder as it goes on. The rapping is very solid and they have a great ear for finding the right pockets in the beats. The production and arrangement are the biggest draw though, for me at least.

I know that sets up a high bar, but I really do like this shit that much. Can't recommend it highly enough, been meaning to make a thread for ages.

there's a pretty sweet c&s version of the album on bandcamp too

^^^^^you can stream the latest album there. there's a c&s version too.

also, if you're all "but i want to bump this in the whip or on the iphone, not on my laptop" then
i totally suggest you get the bandcamper app, it's free and is pretty fresh.

"hittin' the curb" is my fav track.

nice writeup here
so, they're three dudes from dallas, that met up in college in houston,
went back to dallas after graduating, realized their spot was too hood,
so moved back to houston to make music. but still rep dallas.
one dude produces, two rap, or maybe all three rap? still don't know.

oh, they have like 3 old mixtapes too that i haven't checked yet.
