It was initially titled The Chronic 2000 to imply being a sequel to his debut solo effort The Chronic but was re-titled 2001 after Death Row Records released an unrelated compilation album with the title Chronic 2000: Still Smokin in May 1999. Other tentative titles included The Chronic 2001 and Dr. Dre.

For a chunk of summer 1999 after the Death Rom compilation dropped, it was also set to be called Chronic 2000: No Seeds, but I'm speculating Dre and company didn't want to give their former employer any shine at all, leaving the only connection to "Chronic" as the leaf on the cover right before the 2001.

It's probably the best mixed and mastered rap album that's ever been released, or at the very least it's the standard that changed the genre in that regard.

I always assumed the real title was still Chronic 2001, that's what the leaf was for.... calling it "2001" seems awfully literal, like trying to pronounce 'efil4zaggin'

i echo the sentiments in this thread. i really dug a couple of tracks on it, but ultimately the filler proved to be too much of a turn off. that's why i can't consider it a 'classic' in the traditional sense.

There might be some filler but it doesnt detract from the overall quality too much as the sound is consistent throughout.
Its not one of these albums with a random Swizz Beatz joint halfway through or whatever. Dre did a good job with the sequencing.
If Eminem was on it more it might sounded a bit unbalanced but Dre seemed to let him keep some of his best stuff for his own album.

this. being in the south in a non-metro area, this was never on any radio station within my antenna's reach. i only knew of the latter track because I had purchased DirecTV back then, when it was DirecTV/USSB and saw the video on M2 before it became MTV2.

M2 was cool because it was 24 hours of music videos, regardless of genre, and pretty much you never saw two videos from the same genre back to back. i did realize, though, that the 24 hour rotation was actually 8 hours played 3 times a day, which helped me VHS tape many videos from that time, knowing the schedule. Oh, and they never played anything that was running on heavy rotation on regular MTV at the time.

Add to that the fact that I was attending hip hop nights like Scratch in London, which catered for a largely white male crowd, so never really got into the singles off it.

And I just never got round to revisiting it.

There were a lot of self-confessed "real" heads in the London scene that never heard this album at the time for the same reason. I guess a lot of it seemed to come down to snobbery, but it didn't help that Missing Linx flipped that same break, and heads would automatically claim it to be the better version. It's a shame, 'cause they missed out on a cracking album.
