as much as i hold i self in my top when it comes to the rhymesayers roster, carnage is slept on. i know he's not on rhymesayers but dude is dope.
I listened to one of Carnage's very old albums recently and it struck me as sounding very Micranots like. He had that little spot on Eyedea's Oliver Hart back in the day too. Him and Eyedea were great.

There are at least a couple rappers from Minneapolis who have been around forever but never seemed to receive the same level of support others have. Huge coincidence, most (all) of them happen to be black... fucking Minnesota.

Do you mean support locally or in a national sense?

Local support. But local and national support do tend to be related. Hard to get noticed if the locals don't even take notice.

Yeah I can't speak to the local scene, obviously. If it was just a national thing I'd say it has more to do with the odds of ANY rapper from Minneapolis making it big than just race.

myjah, you're not wrong. but at the same time, there's plenty non-white rappers here who do get local and national love.

if you go through your list of "rappers from Minneapolis who have been around forever but never seemed to receive the same level of support others have" i'm willing to bet you'll find some personality traits within them that also helped to hinder them.

do you think the artists you're referencing would have had an easier go at it had they been in arizona, or new jersey, or indiana, or florida, or oregon?

can you gimme a list of the particular rappers you are talking about?

also, it should be noted that pound for pound, i'm pretty sure we have more independent rappers (b&w) living off of their craft than most of the nation. few cities are ahead of us in that regard. and those cities that are ahead of us have much larger populations.

i have no science to back up that last statement, other than my travels and observations.

SGP & Metro Zu as far as underground rappers are concerned. Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Gunplay + many others as far as major label rappers are concerned.

context?

the convo myjah sparked isn't about who's known.
nor were we talking about major label artists.

jeesh ackbar, is it that difficult to read a few posts, before you post?

i'm talking about who's actually eating and paying their bills in minneapolis off of independent rap money.
we have people here who are living off this shit who aren't even that known outside of here.
this place is full of local support if you wanna be an artist of any type.
as long as you like to get wasted and fuck each others roommates, you good.

You win.

I guess I'm honestly just a little peeved with Minnesotans who are totally blind to the racism, etc. that does still persist here (and elsewhere, I know). I was born and raised in Minneapolis and I love it here but I feel like a lot of people turn a blind eye to the flaws that actually exist. No offense to you or any of your ilk at all.

I have to say, "Overcast"/"Lucy Ford EP"/"God Loves Ugly" etc were huge parts of my high school years but then Atmosphere went a different way and it was never the same. Then in the last few weeks I discovered "Blood Makes The Blade Holy/ To All My Friends" and been listening to it OVER and OVER. I fucking love every song on it, the honesty and the new sound and everything. That EP had missed my radar but it was the gateway to understanding the new "mature era" Atmosphere and since I've been listening to "The Family Sign" AND "When Life Gives You Lemons" front to back and they're growing on me as well. All of a sudden the last three Atmosphere projects might be their best work yet and I can't wait for the next one.

Interesting how perspective can change like that

Is punching people in the fact like an aggressive peer review of their work? If so, I applaud your dedication to the scientific method.

this is fresh for what it is

https://soundcloud.com/bk-one/7-blood-drive-slug-demo

https://soundcloud.com/bk-one/7-blood-drive-slug-demo

"Blood Drive" was originally going to feature Slug and MF Doom, but for some reason it just didn't work out with Doom. When Slug sent me this demo, he attached the following instructions for Doom:

"MAP for DOOM
ROGERIO (blood drive)

8 bar intro - DOOM DIALOGUE?
20 bar verse - SLUG
4 bar solo chorus - SLUG
4 bar flute bridge - NO VOCALS
20 bar verse - DOOM
4 bar solo chorus - DOOM
4 bar flute bridge - NO VOCALS
8 bar outro. - SLUG DIALOGUE?

tell DOOM don't do stacks on his 20 bar verse. keep verse one-tracked.

tell him i stacked 3 vocal tracks for the chorus, and explain the layout of the choruses.
have him follow my structure for the chorus, but use his own words.
tell him to put his "stand-ups" on separate 4th vocal track so we can fly his voice onto my chorus and vice versa (I'll say the "stand-ups" in his chorus, he'll say them in mine)."

I love this beat, and I think Slug really killed on here, but when I listen to the album this song sounds unfinished to me. I almost didn't include it, but Slug really wanted this verse to balance out the "frat rap" quality of "Gittit".
