This is weird. I didn't know their catalog wasn't available digitally, but I was pretty sure that iTunes had matched 3 Feet High and Rising, and it did. It's not for sale in the store, but I've seen that happen before -- just not with an older album.

If you don’t know De La Soul’s music yet because you are a young person then that’s fine but you probably don’t want to start here. Grab either the proper Buhloone or maybe De La Soul Is Dead because they are both perfect (3 Ft. hasn’t aged quite as well imo and most of their later shit is just sour).

How many people feel this way? I think I recall Gloss saying the same before, but I've never felt like 3 FT aged poorly, especially compared to other rap albums that came out between '86-'90. If someone came to me and said they knew nothing about De La I would always tell them to start from the beginning and follow the progression through. I also don't know that I'd categorize "most" of their later work as "sour," but I do understand that impression of Stakes Is High. Having said that, I think Stakes Is High is an album that probably was best understood within the context of the general direction that mainstream rap music took between 1993-1996, and not outside of that context. The stuff after Stakes is definitely a step down qualitatively, but "sour" doesn't seem like the right descriptor to me, just less cohesive and purposeful than their early work.

I wouldn't say '3 Feet' hasn't aged as well, so much as 'is Dead' and 'Buhloone' have just aged so much better. Plus, we're 20 years into every hip-hop publication and media outlet always pointing to '3 Feet' as their masterpiece and their definitive statement as artists. Whenever De La is discussed, it's 9 time out of 10 with a clip of "Me, Myself and I" and MAYBE "Eye Know" or "Buddy." As pivotally important as that record was, its status has over-shadowed those two subsequent albums to a degree. That's also probably why the generation who's come late to the De La party (let's say 2000-onwards) has a tendency to get caught off guard with how great and vastly those two other albums are.

For better or worse, '3 Feet' is the type of album that could only have existed in the year it was made, whereas 'is Dead' and 'Buhloone' could have been made today and have much more of a timeless quality. In that same vein, like you mentioned, 'Stakes' could only have existed in '96.
