In observation of the new record and the release show tonight, I assembled this list of five often overlooked Pharoahe Monch verses for the Village Voice today - http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/201 ... verses.php

Always particularly loved how he snaps off on the "Tight" remix. Wouldn't mind hearing those three on a track again.

Most this thread is about old monch or contemplating giving his new album a listen. I'd like to see a review or two..

on first listen, i like this a lot. Some of the beats and topics feel a little generic but in terms of actual rapping i don't think anyone is fucking with Pharaohe. Not sure what the replay value is gonna be like yet

the second verse of the first song on the album is probably the most creative fucking thing that will happen in hip hop in 2014.
Remember he flipped that style on OK material already.

He even says "zarride" before pharcyde etc...

Monch on the mic and EL-P on the beats would be ILLMATICAL.

AH YEAH everbody bow down to Step One the Tunnel bathstall guardian.

listening now. love it. adult version of Good Kid Maad city. Great synth choices, creative drum programming, love that he's making/choosing beats that aren't revolving around samples but still manages to bury a few nice ones here and there. Lovin this style of hip hop right now. Lets see if it has replay value.

Those are actually pretty accurate statements about me!

Just wanna add that I was at the release party losing my shit.

He brought out Lil Fame and did No Mercy and I grabbed some guy I didn't know behind me and a Mindbender moment. "DO YOU KNOW WHAT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN RIGHT NOW?!!!!!"

It's tight to just be a fan, yo.

I listened to Internal Affairs for the first time in years and I'll admit it was MUCH better than I remembered and overall pretty good. I think I was so appalled by "The Ass" and underwhelmed by Simon Says (but not the remix) that it overly affected m impression on the rest of it. So I stand corrected

This album is way better than I expected. Might be his best solo, but then again I hate most of his solo work, except about half of Internal Affairs.

He's on Combat Jack and its a pretty good episode. They listen to tracks from the new album and talk about the concepts behinds each track and the album as a whole. Really well conceived episode of the show though, and definitely worked in piquing my interest for the album.
