DJ Quik thread

Post by seagrams hotsauce »

I did a search and couldn't find anything on the new album, so I figured a new topic was in order. I know he only puts out an album like every five years now, but I figure he's worthy of his own topic considering he pops in the blogs every few months, be it for threatening to quit after his MPC gets stolen, his daughter catching a body, or claiming Three Stacks spread a rumor that he has aids.

Anyway, this album just leaked, and it's predictably great and weird. I'm about halfway through it, and it's a great mix of left-field samples and classic Quik production. If you liked Book of David and Blackout, you'll probably dig this.

I've been a Quik fan since the Sweet Black Pussy days, but I admittedly haven't checked for his last few albums. I just assumed he, along with 99% of all rappers, was fading away into obscurity as the good ol' days were behind him. Incorrect?

I think I jumped the gun on this one. The last half of this album kind of blows. I'll post some less fence sitting opinions later.

Really like most of the leaked tracks from this, especially Pet Semetary and Life Jacket.

BlaQKout was probably the 2nd best album of 2009.

Life Jackets good but I wish hed just sing the hooks himself everytime or get El in or summat, this bird is dragging down the Mack 10 song too. Felt a bit silly when TY$ showed up in the Nobody video when Id been making a case it was either Quik or Suga Free singing for ages.

Even Sway, a man from Oakland, flubbed the other day. Jus Lyke Compton gave us a glimpse into life in Compton backyards apparently.

Should be guaranteed at least 5 solid gold stupido moments but you needa be in a patient mood. He always manages to be the most condescending when hes most out his depth. Ciphas not that bad, he doesnt feign familiarity as much and isnt as stuck in late 90s milquetoast backpackery.

"nebbish npr mainstay who dresses like a southern dandy" being a more considered and knowledgeable rap interviewer than "egomanical real hip hop flagbearer who works at biggest rap radio station + actually has his own rap label" will never get old to me

After a week or so with this I'm really enjoying it. The latter quarter or so has some goofy lines, but the production is incredible and Quiks stream-of-consciousness steez results in some gems.

Quik was always capable of the odd overly earnest turn of phrase imo, dunno if its more on this. Might be the most right to the point rapper ever so collateral damage is expected.

Took me years to handle some of his rapping about sex

^The dickrhymes later on in the album are super offputting. I guess that's a small complaint for a dude who's been doing this for two and a half decades without sounding insanely dated.

Also just noticed that BoD/Blaqout shade from Req. You're saying those are weak spots in Quik's discography?

Ive been listening to Under Tha Influence & Trauma a lot lately, that run from Quiks Groove to Sex Crymee is mental.

House Of Quik albums ranked

Penthouse Players Clique
Street Gospel
Classic 220
New Testament
2nd II None debut
Skanless
The Shit
Non fiction

dunno if the other Hi-C albums or AMGs debut count, think I heard Quik claim AMG stole credit idk

again all those are good albums

He really has a Dre/Primo/Mannie consistent catalogue, just with far less marketable taste in rappers

Still maintain that Safe + Sound is his best album.

Rythmalism is a weird choice for the top, but I do think it's pretty underrated by a lot of people. It's quik at his most tropical

I always thought Rhythmalism was the fan favourite, its definitely the most smoov/lush/90s r&b sounding which is his lane. Ive never seen an album cover represent its contents better either.

to me rhythmalism is both his most musically accomplished—the first real push into auteur status as a beatmaker—and the signal to noise ratio of his rapping is suuuper high. Very #message oriented w/out feeling compromised by propagandic blah blah blah
