Pete Rock Tribute & Interview

Post by Philaflava »

For the 5 listeners here, this is for you. Thanks for your support!

Episode 24 was an idea we had for a while. We all said Pete Rock deserves a proper tribute, so we’re proud to finally present the first of two installments of this Soul Brother #1 tribute. If you had asked us a little over a year ago when we started Take It Personal, that we’d have two of the greatest producers of all-time as our guests, we wouldn’t have believed it. This is truly a case of dreams becoming reality. It was an honor celebrating Pete Rock’s distinguished catalog and even a bigger honor having him as a guest on our show. We talk with Pete about Heavy D, DJ Premier, De La Soul, Dilla, Redman, Kanye all the way to his top 5 producers. He shared his thoughts on drumless beats these days. We even get the answer to a possible CL Smooth reunion. Please join us as we celebrate one of the greatest producers to ever do it – Pete Rock!

Nice. Got this downloaded ready for tomorrow. Did you quiz him on what Apathy said about his work ethic?

Ap came up once and that was to talk about his new single he produced. Pete did the interview fresh off the plane after a week in Disney so he was exhausted to say the least.

Great show/ interview.

I guess I am in the minority, and of course I am East Coast biased, but I don't have Dre in my top 3 producers. Yes, he gets the accolades from a sonic standpoint because from that perspective he is likely #1, but as far as beats go, he is somewhere in the bottom half of the top 10 for me.

Nah - I mean what he said about Pete being so high all the time that it takes years to get anything finished with him.

Thanks.

Is Dre in your top 5? I mean, we tend to forget a lot of what he did in the 80s/90s and I know he gets a bad rap about ghost producers but that is no different than Marley.

No, Dre is not in my top 5. Of course I love him, but that is mostly from a sonic standpoint. No producer's beats sound as good as his on that level. Since day one. If any producer brought him in to mix and make their beats sound as good as possible, so many songs would sound better. But from a purely beat making/production standpoint, there are many I think are better. I am going to name a bunch, but if we are bringing the sonic standpoint into question, as I said, overall he has to be in the lower half of my top 10.

In no order:

Pete
Preem
Q-Tip
Large
Marley
45 King
Dimaond D
Dilla
Buckwild,
RZA
Beatminerz

I am not trying to shit on Dre at all, I just don't think his work stands out more (aside from sonically) than anyone on this list. Would I kill someone for putting him in the top 3 or 5? No. But should I be killed for putting all the above mentioned before him? Not in my opinion.

Nah, you got good taste me. I really can't argue with your 10. I just think your preference is very much NY centric. Like for me, DJ Quik over a few of those guys but that is because I love the west sound. Buckwild is a fav of mine tho.

Nice interview and tribute mix! I remember the last time I saw Pete in person, a 2000 in-store for his Soul Survivor LP at a clothing store in NYC's West Village that's now closed called Transit.

I was hoping to hear the Pete Rock remix of Busta's Live To Regret in the mix, I've been looking for that exclusive Future Flavaz remix for years!

Transit was the go to spot in the early-2000's. AF1 selection was premium.

Part 2 concludes our 8-hour Pete Rock tribute. It was a daunting task to properly celebrate Pete’s astonishing career but after two episodes and 480 minutes of music, we think we got it right. Part 2 focuses more on Pete’s work from the late 90s all the way to today. Besides the solo work, we have music from Rakim, Raekwon, Bumpy Knuckles, Phife Dawg, Black Star, Guru, Ghostface Killah, Ill Bill, Big L, Roc Marciano, The LOX, Redman, Planet Asia, Cormega, Sadat X, Termanology, Grap Luva, Nature, Torae, Smoke DZA, Cypress Hill, De La Soul & Apathy to name a few.

Don't forget, we just relaunched our new website TakeItPersonalRadio.com, where you can stream, download and view all playlists for every episode, including this one. Please join us as we continue to celebrate one of the greatest producers to ever do it – Pete Rock!

Man, these shows make my days as an intern a little bit more bearable. I'd be willing to throw a bit your way to support financially if I could. Just saying. What you guys are doing is very much appreciated.

Listened to half of this and superb as ever. Getting through yours ( or a lot of podcasts these days) is often a daunting task, but the end result is always well worth it. Great job as usual.
