1995

This stack gives you a glimpse of just how special 1995 was. I realize I’m missing a few releases too. I just have a lot of these on vinyl or cassette tape. Labcabincalifornia, Sittin’ On Chrome, E. 1999 Eternal, Operation Stackola, Curb Servin’, Temples of Boom, Season of Da Siccness, Brothas Doobie, even the Jamal and Miilkbone debuts. 1996 was great too, but ’95 was the last year in the 2nd golden era IMO. ’96 hip-hop greatly changed and then by ’97 the jiggy-era had begun.

Which are your 5 favorite 1995 albums?

This is really difficult.

Mobb Deep
Rae
Smif N Wessun
Gza
Mic Geronimo

# 5 could easily have been AZ, Big L, Fat Joe, G Rap, 2PAC, etc

Cause Mic G is just a personal around the way favorite (and it is actually a really well put together album) and it's impossible not to have GZA in there. LS is a favorite obviously but I loved a lot of records that year. Just impossible to not have it on the list.

gza, rae, mobb deep, goodie mob & smif n wessun

g rap's album would have been much better if he replaced the regular versions of "fast life" and "it's a shame" with the "fast life" buckwild remix and "hey mister mister"...

Yes, great year! All those are my favorites. Back when artist made it a point to not only put out classic material but create a sound that would define the NYC experience and vibe to the rest of the world. I remember feeling like the Mobb, Smif N Wessun, Kool G Rap, Show & A.G. and Group Home albums evoked the gritty NYC street vibe.

Anyone else surprised at how dark the Show & A.G. Goodfellas album was in comparison to Runaway Slave? I know I was.

I remember going to an in-store for Liquid Swords and meeting GZA, he signed my copy of Words From The Genius. In comparison to 93' Til Infinity, I remember feeling underwhelmed by that Souls Of Mischief sophomore LP when it came out. I need go revisit that one and see how I feel now.

I always say '95 was the last great year for FM NYC radio. You had two Pete Rock and Marley Marl shows, Stretch & Bobbito, The Awesome Two, Evil Dee, Mister Magic & Mister Cee, Funkmaster Flex, and New York Live all on each week. I remember being in a state of confusion as to what show I was gonna tape.

Absolutely. Same thing happened to a lesser extent from Daily Operation to Hard to Earn. Shit got darker and harder between 92-94,95

You mean this sick-ass Buckwild remix? That's the real OG version to me, not the album version.
And if *you* like this song, I honestly will end my hatred for you.
This song is a fucking hip hop prayer from the gods and its one of the few 90s songs I NEVER stopped play religiously.

Best of 95 for me:
Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia (A GOD DAMN MASTERPIECE THAT SHOULD WENT DOUBLE PLATINUM. So shitty to see what Pharcyde fell apart into becoming)
AZ (The NYC King that never got officially crowned. 'Mo Money, Mo Murda, Mo Homicide' shoulda been a trilogy with Prodigy and Cormega in the sequels)
Big L (Don't make me shed a tear for Lamont. AGAIN.)
Onyx - All We Got Iz Us ('Last Dayz' is a fucking masterpiece of 90s NYC New World Order paranoia)
Alkaholiks - Coast II Coast (Tash really shoulda reigned for a few years, J-Ro also is a LA rap king)
KRS-One - his self-titled solo album was really good, actually. Nowadays, I can't stand what he's become. But at the time, this album meant the world to me. 'Aw Yeah' :rockout: & 'Free Mumia' still matters.

Left out the :wutang: because... well it's obvious. Every Wu-Tang album added a level of power to my existence :sherlock:
Also both Shabazz The Disciple 12 inches - Death Be The Penalty and Crime Sage were next shit.
Nearly cried when I finally heard 'Death Be The Penalty' in full. God damn that record was REAL AS FUCK

1995 WAS the LAST real year of mostly immaculate conception hip hop. Before Death Row raped rap.

Yep. I was guilty of this. Think I gave it a spin and left it gathering dust. Never thought in 1995 that this album would be one of my favourites in 2018.

This was '96. I had to check Discogs on that because it was one of the first non-album singles I thought of  Better than anything on Dah Shinin', imho. Shit, might be my fave BCC song of all time, tbh.

Another 12" only fave from '95:

Redman - Can't Wait (Remix 2)

This is actually the original version which was supposed to be a Tonite's Da Nite sequel but later came out on the Dat Undaground Shit!!!! EP as a "remix". Much prefer this to the stodgy Dare Iz A Darkside version.

Benz Or Beamer was definitely one of the best soundtrack exclusives of 1995:

One of the rawest NYC rap anthems of all time dropped in 95. Onyx did timeless greatness on this.

I gotta give Ja Rule a DROP more props for surviving this video shoot
