Usher ft. Ella Mai - Don't Waste My Time (2020)
First R&B song I've liked so far this year. Best Usher single since Good Kisser, imho.

Words don't describe how much I love this song. I would put it in my top 50 favorite songs ever. That beat switch is so dirty, love that old dusty jazz/vocal sample mixed together. Big Ghost is so ill. That whole album is flames.
Such an epic beat from Giallo Point. Another very good album from 2017.

Generally, I find Faux Marciano-core boring, but this song has chutzpah!

Re: Rolling current songs you're feeling thread
INCOMING TL;DR RAP ANALYSIS: He's still signed to Busta's label, right? Still haven't heard anybody talk about this dude, despite the Roc Marci co-sign. Didn't make much of an impression on me when (looking back) I must've first heard 'em, back in one of the '16 BET Hip Hop Award Cyphers. He's outta Syracuse. He had a different name then, “Aaron Cook$”, now it's the more distinctive but arguably worse, “Stove God Cook$.” Fast-forward a few years (he doesn't appear to have done more than the average of like a feature a year in his career, Percee P style) and he's the only guy featured on two tracks from Marci's Marcielago album. And I remember thinking, who the fuck is this guy? Despite having already heard the cypher, I didn't remember him or make any connections as to who he was at the time, maybe because of the name change and he didn't stand out to me all that much then either.
Then when this dropped, I thought well now he's got a mixtape (judging by the quality of the album art at least, I hope that's not what you'd use for a debut album) and it's seemingly entirely produced by Roc Marci. Now I know Marciano has done this at least once before a couple years ago, where he did all the beats for this guy Therman Munsin ('nother quality name) and put it out limited through Fat Beats. Nobody seemed to care much about that project or MC and I thought this was gonna be more of the same. Made a note of it but wasn't in a rush to click because of the track record and if the picture cover was anything like the time put into the lyrics, I was gonna be into this entirely for the beats. When I got around to it I actually ended up laughing out loud at a couple of the punchlines throughout.
Feels partly like Roc Marc's pen, Pusha T's subject matter (which can get old, even when someone of Push's level does it), Westside Gunn's attitude, and someone like Wiki a bit in the voice and the regrettable urge to have these singy-songy hooks where you just stretch the syllable of the word until it gets annoying (especially with that East New York voice / accent. Westside is heavily guilty of that too of course, probably more so but people'll recognize shades of both). And then there'll be some weirdo niche references like Crimeapple or Your Old Droog might make.
Now I don't wanna oversell it because it's not as good as any of those one guys obviously, it's just a weird mix aesthetically, yet kinda works. It's uneven, mostly because of the hooks, played-out topics, and Griselda influenced sound effect type shit (BOOM BOOM BOOM... ad infinitum), which personally I am not a fan of. However, some of that does help make it more distinctive and more interesting of a sound at least. And the beats and some of the punches are worthwhile. I've played the whole project back a couple times by now, which is rare for me for a new release in today's world. I enjoyed it the first time, didn't think it was as great the second but caught some more stuff, and then once it got stuck in my head, even some of the more grating stuff began to grow on me. The tape is kinda like that in general too, where the first track or two I didn't notice or care much but then it builds. The middle of it is when I started paying attention. And then it peters out a bit. (Which is the the reverse of a lot of the hollow “start strong / end strong” filler projects.)

It's a truly atrocious moniker innit?
Truthfully, I haven't listened to the rest of the album.

Re: Rolling current songs you're feeling thread
I honestly almost skipped it over entirely with that name and artwork combo.
The third track here, Crosses, is the one that first caught my ear. "Fentayl flow, you bit off more than you can chew. / My daughter wearin' chinchillas to the pettin' zoo." "Don't make me go throw on my bigga chain. / In the tsunami, I'll sell a brick o' rain." It's also the one where his voice probably sounds closest to Wiki's, especially on that hook. Despite some obviously glaring flaws, it's one of the top projects so far for me this year, if we're just goin' off repeated listens.

Yup. First future classic album of the new decade.
Re: Rolling current songs you're feeling thread
Reasonable Drought has been getting hype on various forums. I gave it a try and wasn't feeling it, don't like Cooks' voice or flow. Roc is typically ill with the beats but those weren't his best - there were a couple smashers though.
Another one of my favorite songs ever. That beat is so dope, the scratching on the hook is too.

Should be way bigger. I thought Ether would be the de facto star of this thing, but I see Fivio getting all the looks.Career Over Like Mike(NJJ) wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 6:24 pmEther Da Connect ft. Fivio Foreign & Mr. Swipey - WAKA (2019)
