Another hilarious aspect of this shit is RG's tendency to just delete any shit that gets scrutinized. The gawker article points out a video called 'chief keef gets TOO HIGH to explain his lyrics' which has since been deleted. Noz linked to both Oohla and RGs pages for Yung Joc's It's Goin Down, and RG pulled their page, which is extra hilarious because now they have a whole page of Yung Joc songs that doesn't include the one that people might actually be familiar with.

Google Penalizes Rap Genius for Gaming Search Rank

Google has apparently punished a provocative music-lyrics website after learning it had unscrupulously tried to improve its search rankings.

The site, Rap Genius, whose detailed annotations of hip-hop songs — serious and farcical — are widely cited by journalists and bloggers, was penalized by Google after acknowledging that it had violated the company’s rules regarding optimizing search results.

On Christmas Day, reports surfaced that Rap Genius was effectively removed from Google’s search engine. Enter either the company name or a rap lyric on Google’s search engine and they no longer come up anywhere near the top of the search results.

Earlier in the week, Rap Genius wrote an open letter of apology admitting that it had been inflating its Google traffic rankings by giving exposure to bloggers — like shout-outs on Twitter — in exchange for linking back to Rap Genius. Such quid pro quo tactics are considered verboten by Google.

Until acknowledging its misconduct, Rap Genius was a popular site with a lot of buzz and $15 million in funding from the respected venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Being ostracized by Google, which steers much of the traffic around the Internet, can severely hurt a website’s business.

The three Rap Genius co-founders — all graduates of Yale who have become known for their provocative behavior — indicated in the letter that they soon hope to fix the problem and make peace with Google.
