i threw together a throwback compilation of a few of my fave g-funk pimp artists i think people in this thread may appreciate.

http://www24.zippyshare.com/v/5592488/file.html
A few weeks ago the weather started to improve in Vancouver, so I made an iTunes playlist to stunt to. It started raining again, but I'll still be slapping this from the Spring through the Summertime.

Dru Down, Suga Free, Goldy, Kokane and Dubee represent a group of uniquely Californian rappers who share an image passed down through Bay Area pimps, classic blaxploitation cinema and Midwest funk pioneers. On Pimp of the Year, Dru Down declares "I ain't trippin'" after being advised of a female's rape; a major tenet of Suga Free's is that he would rather give you his bitch than share his marijuana cigarette with you; and Goldy and Ant Banks trade stories of forced abortions on their dark warning to the finer sex, Baby By A Dog. All delivered in a collected manner amidst an air of perm juice and gold teeth.

Aside from the rappers obvious shared characteristics, the true through line here lies within the production. Ant Banks, Cold 187um, DJ Quik and Khayree represent some of the best (and most influential) G-Funk producers to ever exist. This group was a dream team from 1992-1996 and this is as close as we'll get to them collaborating on an album in their prime.

I rounded off the playlist with some classic 80s funk and R&B jams. The compilation is heavy on singles. These are the type of songs that are meant to be danced to at pool parties that look like the Rumps & A Bump videoshoot (or at least a relaxation session on your stoop with your cat and some organic agua fresca).

06. Suga Free - I'd Rather Give You My Bitch
07. Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love
08. Mac Dre - 4 Myself feat. Dubee & Devious

I wish bay area rappers would stop trying to be so prolific and just focus on quality over quantity.

thanks E40.

leave him alone, its probably JT The Bigga Figga or Master P. I kinda like the work ethic, its not like most people can make a decent album now anyway and its easy to make a playlist, the Revenue Retrievins were some of 40s best work in years too.
