Tha Alkaholiks: The Buffalo Bills of Hip Hop?

Post by djjeffresh »

Likwidation came out when I was in high school.

Overall it was pretty solid, minus the ghey album cover:

Image

But check it: Likwidation, Hip Hop Drunkies, Tore Down, Captain Hook...fuckin All Night (dope flutes) That album was tight.

They made some noise with their earlier stuff I guess, didn't really get into it.

Ignored the newer shit they tried with Pharell, etc.

Anyhow, did these guys have potential for something better, or were they really just some one-trick ponies?--kind of the west coast version of The Beatnuts.

Madlib and Xzibit blew up and did their things while the original Likwit crew members floundered into obscurity.

Did they leave a bigger mark on hip hop in your opinion? What do yall think of Tha Liks?

In my opinion, one of the best groups to ever do party Hip Hop.

I thought XO Experience was one of the best party albums ever made and I don't think they ever made a bad album.

They are underrated, classic, and one of my favorite groups of all time.

Ill live show too.

Their first three albums were pretty damn good for what they were doing, I'm surprised you only got into Likwidation, you should give 21 & Over and Coast II Coast another listen, might grow on you.

I think they got sidetracked when Tash tried to do the solo thing and droppes that album that nobody talks about. The gap between Likwidation and XO hurt their momentum

I love Rap Life. I used to sit in my car after work every night and get high listening to that album.

And 21 & Over is a classic.

That's the only stuff I ever really checked, though.

I had problems with X.O. Experience. It felt like they were trying too hard to make a party album. That was their worst album out of all of them, IMO. That last album, Firewater, made up for that; some bangers on that shit.

But yeah, Tha Liks is the one group I think should've blown up more than most groups.

The Alkaholiks were good but they are enormously overrated on this site.

Tha Alkaholiks have some classic material, some bad stuff. Slightly above average. Great party records though. It's the 90's black Beasties.

No. It has to do with their music. The fact that people here actually anticipate a Tash verse in 2009 is a mind-boggling sidenote, but it doesn't influence my estimation of their music. Their first three albums were good, but they aren't very important int he grand scheme. People make the claim that they made "great" party music and yet their music got close to no burn at clubs or house parties at the time (this might be different in other areas, though I doub it).

I think you might have misunderstood, it was moreso the idea of Tash on a RZA beat spitting with KGR that got us excited. Atleast in my case.

Not sure what "not important" means. It was good fun music that takes me back to the days of shoplifting Jim Bean bottles. I will concede that I wouldn't enjoy them as much if I didn't have the memories I relate their music to.

Okay, fine, then what I meant was on the east coast they were largely ignored in favor of The Lost Boyz and Junior Mafia when it came to party rap. Their music was strictly confined to late night mix shows.

This is where region comes in cause in Cali, They had songs that would set the house partys off. Especially, Coast II Coast. Not too much burn in clubs. The little bar joints my homie used to Dj he would set it off though.

who cares how they succeeded or failed business wise? us lovers of this shit know that some of the greats continue to get slept on (ahem CORMEGA ahem, etc.)

the Liks made DOZENS of great hip hop moments.

if the Liks made an EP/LP with the Neptunes, that shit woulda been classic as fuck.
the Liks and ODB made one of the best hip hop drinking anthems of all time together.
21 and Over had tons of great shit on it.
Coast II Coast was also simply great.
Likwidation was probably their pinnacle, and it was :rockout: as :ohsh:
XO Experience was them too aware of themselves, kinda becoming their version of what Black Sunday was to Cypress Hill. But the Liks never jumped the shark, and they never got the love they deserved. Their time just never really arrived... and it was gone before any of us even knew it. Kinda like the Beatnuts, maybe... but even the Beatnuts had a medium sized era as kings of East Coast production that kept them bubbling.

the Liks were always were themselves, and even when Tash did his solo album, it was a reach up for his character, not a reach out of his character. Maybe he couldn't have afforded the whole Rap Life he was claiming, but he was still spitting fire and doing what he does best: being a sharp-witted weeded-out West Coast wordsmith with a wicked flow.

the Liks could still come back and tear rap a new asshole then pour some bourbon and gin in it.

Tash needs to come with a "i dont give a fuck" type solo album, and J. Ro needs to surprise everyone with his "bend you in half/ and drink a Genuine Draft" type shit

this shit is fucking timeless:

that was the problem with XO Experience in my estimation.
they went outside of the crew and let Rockwilder and Neptunes contribute to the sound.

the liks already had E-Swift and were down with Madlib and Lootpack.
They went for mainstream/club appeal with "Best You Can"
it just sounds like any Nore/Jay-z/Insert East C rapper with Neptunes production in the early2000s.

It doesn't sound like the Liks.
as much good the Neptunes did for hip hop, they ruined some shit as well.
