good thread, i didnt really get put up on Eligh's music until 99' but then i backtracked and got all of his older stuff. He's been known to fuck it up severely on the track when he gets on some battle shit, my favorite examples would have to be..

- Submental (Log Cabin)

- Go see the preist

- Melancholy Manuscripts

- POWERFUL!!! (it's somewhat of a softie song but i like it)

- The avenue

- Nightlife

- and of course Sunsprayed

This song is the shit, one of the first joints that really put me on to the LL Crew. Eligh was on point here, and dropping some serious end-of-the-world, post-apocalyptic hermit-in-the-mountain type shit.

It's too bad a lot of the Legends have started following trends instead of setting them like they used too. Every once in a while a really good record will come out of the camp (usually related to Eligh or the Journeymen) but a lot of the joints they're releasing now are on some second-generation hyphy-wannabe bullshit. I really liked the 3 Melancholy Gypsys full-length back in 2005 but I haven't really felt much else since then.

Almost anything from the 1995-1999 four-track era is dope though.

Murs now sucks. (Great live performer, though.)

believe me he's still got it. the new g&e album may seem soft for fans of the old legends but what brought me back to feeling their music was how elevated his style was on each song. performance wise he still kills it too. Here's a vid of him performing a song off his new album "the grey crow" which is supposed to come out this year.

definitely agree with this 100%, i hated it when they moved out of oakland to LA cause the music made a huge change. loved almost famous but damn near hated creative differences

His emceeing is still on point but it's a very soft album, like half of it is folk music, and it sounds like him & his mom are rapping/singing to each other a lot of the time. To be honest I haven't gone back to it really after a couple listens...The new G&E on the other hand has stayed in steady rotation.

Yeah, I can agree with this.......overall, its an interesting sounding album. Nothing like Gas Dream or any of his others that have a harder sound.

Log Cabin is actually very, very dope. Released one tape and then almost immediately broke up to pursue careers as both solo artists and groups. Thier shit was on some mystical, vision-quest type vibe at times but they've got skills for days.

According to some of the original members, the crew came together in the early 90's following a couple of failed record deals by the UniverSouls and Eligh, and for the first few years of it's existence Log Cabin membership flucuated between 6 and 13 members, but eventually coalesced around the 3 Melancholy Gypsys (Eligh, Murs, and Scarub), the UniverSouls (Tom Slick, Radioinactive, and Malik the Problem Child...I think?), and a couple of solo cats (Pooridge, Neosapien, Sahga, and Elusive). In 1995 Log Cabin was supposed to release a record called "LA Experimental" that never surfaced. Some of the joints that were supposed to be on that record were eventually released on Murs' first tape, "CoMURShul."

Shortly after the "CoMURShul" tape dropped Log Cabin broke up, with the Gypsys and most of the UniverSouls splitting for the Bay. This is where all the mythical bullshit starts...depending on who you talk to, the reason for the split was either artistic differences or (according to more popular opinion) the future LL crew members getting proverbially run out of LA by the Afterlife faction of Project Blowed. Apparently, Eligh said some pretty incendiary shit at a Good Life open mic night (something about "I'll serve every sucker in here...") and Ellay Khule the Rifleman took offense to some shit that Eligh said on "Dire Straits," a Log Cabin joint on the "CoMURShul" tape. Plus, the fact that Eligh and a couple of other Log Cabin dudes freaked it in the fast-rap chop style that the Blowed were famous for couldn't have helped either; they were percieved by a lot of Blowed members as biting their style, not paying homage to it.

Apparently it's all good between the two camps now, but I guess you could say that the Legends won out in the long run due to the (relative) success they've enjoyed over the past 10 or so years. The Afterlife (who are in my opinion vastly more talented), however, are still for the most part making hand-burnt CD-Rs to sell at the Access Hip Hop store. Rifleman seems to have enjoyed a little more success than most of those cats; I think his "Califormula" project was officially pressed and distributed through Decon Records which has put out various Blowed joints over the years. But I digress.

Anyway, I've got what I think is (at least in some form) the "LA Experimental" tape. These tracks have been circulating the dub / SoulSeek circuit for the past five or six years, and from what I can tell comprise the entire Log Cabin discography, including joints like "Sunsprayed" and "Dire Straits," which showed up on later Legends tapes. I can up it later tonight if anybody wants it.

For further reading (and a lot of first-hand Log Cabin knowledge) check out this Cocaine Blunts post and this post over at Dergatron 9000. Props to Noz & Dergatron for schooling me on these dudes.

Eligh's a great mc and an underrated producer. Sidewasdayz and Poltergeist are my favorite ones from him.

log cabin/old legends stuff were cool at the time.

i cant hate on the crew for trying different styles, some people might think they're selling out or whatever. i think making their sound more accessible and evolving using their own flavor to create good music would be excellent.

in fact my problems with the crew really started when they started seeing some success and started releasing all these albums that were watered down, UHB 4, Grouch's newer stuff, Sunspot Jonz, etc. its like they had no discretion for awhilereleasing all these albums that included every half-assed song they recorded. kinda lost track of them after that.

how does poltergeist stack up against other eligh LPs? havent heard it.

i honestly don't think eligh has released one LP on his own that was wack, but that may be just me. I thought poltergeist was ill, i would put it 3rd or so behind story of 2 worlds and gas dream

You need this album, bottom line. Production is the best Eligh's ever done and he's raping the mic like Employee's talking about in this thread.

wasn't that track called "Lumbajacks"? I think it was on a HipHop Kclan tape.
