Thoughts on new Rakim single,"Holy Are You"?

Post by Verge »

My girl just sent me this.
I checked the web, they upped it earlier on 2dopeboyz.
And apparently the album is 'supposed' to drop this fall.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/62674654afae08ed/

So, while listening to the intro, I was kinda amped because I figured it would
be that played out but rugged Axelrod sample. It is, but with some gay ass
keyboards over that shit. Everything about the beat is cool except for the
constant keyboards faggin' it up. I don't care who did the beat, it sucks.

I'll have to force myself to relisten so I can actually hear his rhymes instead of them bitch ass presets.

beat's dope. the second switchup is a bit much with the synth (a bit annoying) but otherwise a solid beat.

i agree, they crowded that sample with a bunch of unecessary shit....

vinyl sample + digi keys = me no like....

I'll give em' a break though cause I've used that same sample before....there's not too too much to work with after that vocal cuts out...It could be done, but it might be a lil' stable....

Relistened and I'm sticking with my first reaction.
It was really tough getting through the song because of those damn keyboard sounds.
And I don't hate ALL keyboard beats, certain cats can bring it, but this ain't one of 'em.
If they stripped it down to just the drums, bass, pianos, and lyrics, then I
could say it's dope. Hope the acapella leaks. Shit needs a remix quick.

The god does bring it, though.

I'm old and I hate those kind of synth sounds.
They give me unneeded anxiety.
They make it sound like a club song and that's not my steez or Rakim's steez.
Like I said, if they took them synths out, I would like it.
And I know what you mean about heads here basically shitting on everything.
I'm not one of them.
It's them synths, man, they irk me something awful.

it sounds like it came from a juno rather than a motif.
i could be wrong, i usually am.
but that sound seems more of a 70's sound, than it does a contemporary radio sound.
seems more funk than anything.

i have no idea why i'm responding again.
it's proven that i probably have the worst taste on this board.

I agree with Verge, this has potential but is waaaaay over-produced. It's another example of 'It's Nothing' which could have been excellent. He doesn't need all that chaff in his production.

This for me shows his potential when the beat is so minimal and sparse and it's all about his voice:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZMCYrgOAXE

It's the R for GOD's sake, less production = more. Say what you want about Eric B but his beats complemented Rakim's style perfectly. Since that partnership ended, apart from the odd moment of genius, the beats just haven't worked...

...and I'm sorry to say the next album will be no different.

Yeah, people generally do, but I generally don't, so don't lump me into any
generalized shit.
I posted this shit because I knew people would like it and it's Rakim.
Was I supposed to act like the synths didn't make this unlistenable to me?
It's a personal gripe of mine. Most people seem to not agree with me on
this, so good, enjoy the download. I'm not gonna post something and either-
a)Act like I like it, when I don't.
or
b)Post the mp3 and nothing else.

You can get that from many of the 10 posts a day about nothing blogs out there.

Again, minus this faggoty sound and I would like it-
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/sh ... on=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=7917550-d9d" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=7917550-d9d" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d></object>
And yes, this is some over critique ing ass shit, but the synths persist
through the whole track and kill it, IMO.
