Im just saying. Honestly, aside from the fact that he was in one of the greatest groups of all time, I think that Pos (and to a degree because he isn't a legend...) and Jay dont get the love/credit because of what is the expectation of hip hop style.

In this form, we've come to an era where the highest technique is the punchline, at the expense of imagery, cadence, metaphor. That isn't really Pos or Jay's strong suit. Punchline and Presence are king in the art form now. I've said this a lot, punchlines used to be more of a device in a rap, it was a way to insert a joke or exclaim a point in the verse. Now its the whole or most prominent part of the verse. I dont see too many emcees with the writing skill to give you an image, create a mood and use everything, cadence, metaphor, punches, imagery or any set of multiple devices.

Its just become a style all its own, just like battling. People who deride you as a "boom bap dinosaur" dont understand that emceeing as a form is not just one piece, but many pieces...there aren't a lot of artist who combine them all....and the last few eras of rappers are honed in on, the most disposable and easily transferable aspects, presence and punches. You create aggression more in your posture, then in your actual writing now. Your braggadocio is good enough if you look the part. Kane's style was as much about what he said and how he said as it was how he looked.

Going back again, when you realize its about who *your* character is, their story, or the stories they are going to tell, and how to use the language along with everything else...that is how you have the chance to become "great"

The moral of the thread. In two concise sentences.

FUCK YOU AND YOUR RATIONALITY, BRO. HIS ALBUM IS NOT ONLY GOING TO CHANGE THE GAME, IT'S GOING TO SOLVE THE JOINT PROBELMS OF CHILD HUNGER AND WORLDWIDE POVERTY.

i don't agree with that at all. i think most people that know rap music write off punchline rappers for what they are. that might be an NY thing or something, cuz I don't know anyone out here that puts any emphasis on punchlines equaling a dope mc (outside of the battle realm, which is basically the wwf of rap at this point).

i've stayed out of this thread but read the whole thing, and just wanted to say i think jay electronica is very very dope. i loved the "wtf is a jay electronica" tape and still listen to it. exhibit C is amazing, everything i've heard from him ranges from "pretty damn good" to "fucking awesome."

i also agree with what timlaska just said...he's been very dope so far, but he could fuck it all up by making a bad album. hopefully he sticks to his formula and picks good beats and it all falls into place.

Seriously?

Everyone on the West Coast identifies the level a rapper's appeal and skill using two measurements (no homo): Punchlines and Eminem-level multi-mania.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say the Punchline MC is more of a presence than any other classification of MC presently existing on the West Coast.

i can see the multis thing, and i think that's obnoxious...but punchlines? in songs? i dunno.

maybe i'm out of touch, but it's definitely not an important part of what's happening in LA right now.

well, actually i guess you're right, i wasn't thinking bigger picture and thinking of dudes like wayne and drake who are punchline crazy. but they aren't the type of rapper i think of when i hear "punchline rapper."

point is, jay elec is dope.

Well, L.A. is a universe unto itself and living their is going to give you a far more accurate sense of what is and isn't. But up here in the Bay, it is punchline-multi-justturnedgangsta mania.
