Best producer on the mic VRS. best MC behind the boards...

Post by cenzi »

Unkut.com had a three bracket poll looking for best producer on the mic.

these were their results.

# Q-Tip (22%, 144 Votes)
# The RZA (18%, 118 Votes)
# DOOM (18%, 117 Votes)
# Kanye West (16%, 100 Votes)
# Diamond D (13%, 85 Votes)
# Wildcard: Pimp C (7%, 42 Votes)
# Havoc (6%, 38 Votes)

But some dude commented that there was a big difference between Best producer on the mic and the best MC behind the boards.

The best MC with production skills, in my opinion, is KRS. He is behind Mad Lion's beats (I thin all of Real Ting), some of BDP's beats (I'm Still#1) and some raw Channel Live beats (Mad Izm), plus random dope shit for Poor Righteous Teachers, Chubb Rock and Queen Latifah.

Now on the other hand, Producers that pick up the mic to rap... I gotta give it to Kanye. Fuck. I hate the dude, but, he does come real nice on the mic, no faggot.

If anyone can confirm that Lord Finesse didn't have a ghostwriter, than I might swing my vote his way.

Lord Finesse, Kanye, Diamond D and Extra P were/are all excellent producers with skills on the microphone. To some degree debatable, heard many different opinions.

I don't doubt that KRS-One is the best MC with production skills.

Might it be possible that there are actually three categories to consider:

Best Producer on the mic

Best Emcee behind the boards

Best Rapper/Producer (someone equally invested in both practices, like say Lord Finesse or Large Professor)

???

Why not? KRS has tons of weak beats.

KRS's track record vrs. Fizzy's ??

you must be mixing personal tastes. I mean, to me Lynch Hung is my favourite MC making beats, but he cant be the best.

Yeah, KRS has produced a lot of dope beats. I was actually thinking about putting together his production discography.

My favorite producer on the mic is the Large Professor.

Scarface has made a lot of dope beats... I'd definitely consider him one of the better MCs behind the boards.

Kanye is an emcee first. He got into producing because he needed beats.

He was making beats in the mid 90's, was he emcee'ing?
I'm not being smug, it's an honest question.

I would agree with this. People tend to forget that even though Kanye came in the game as a producer, he's ALWAYS been a rapper. He was a rapper first. It's just way easier to get people to pay your for beats than to get them to pay you to rap.

Cold 187um impacted the west coast in a BIG way. He pretty much soundscaped what the next 15 years would sound like after he finished Black Mafia Life.
