Butterfly has a record deal

Post by Employee »

http://www.prefixmag.com/news/sub-pop-s ... ces/43922/
Sub Pop announced this morning that it has signed Shabazz Palaces, the dark alter ego of Digable Planets' Ishmael Butler. It's a new look for Sub Pop, which until now had stayed out of rap music. Though Shabazz Palaces' lyrical, hook-less experimentation rap is a good fit for an indie label. There's no way this guy could live on Def Jam. Plus Butler currently lives in Seattle, so at least he's in the same town. The label will be releasing Shabazz's first LP (he released two EPs last year), but in the meantime it put out the above video for "Belhaven Meridian," a good intro to those not familiar with the charms of Shabazz Palaces.

SP is really, really good. SubPop is probably a good fit for them; their shit is far from conventional.

Its from the self titled Shabazz Palaces mini-album. Its more indicative of the album's sound than the Belhaven Meridian video.

Cherrywine was utterly forgettable. I'm glad Ish is on to new shit.

In related news I saw Digable Planets a couple weeks ago. The show was fucking great.

He sounds like he's gotten better. I like everything I've heard from him the last few years.
He's like an angrier Q-tip or something.

I know I'm in the minority but I was a fan of Cherrywine.
Shabazz Palaces is similar (electro-ish) but much darker and more rappity.

Yeah, Shabazz is definitely darker. They're working with Erik Blood, who's actually a shoegaze musician around these parts with some talent behind the boards. It's interesting to hear how Ish has developed. Whoever said he's like an angrier (I'd probably say more militant than angry) Tip is pretty much on point.

I saw Ish at the Red Bull Big Tune beat battle here last night, chopped it up with him for a bit. They're excited about the SubPop deal. Color me excited as well.

or even better, put "site:mediafire.com Shabazz Palaces"

motherfuckers seriously need to learn how to use google around here. i assume everyone who's on a messageboard is pretty much a nerd; apparently that's not the case.
