What Albums Do You Want To Hear Remastered?

How do you feel about albums being remastered?

A lot of albums are getting the treatment these days for their 10 or 20 year anniversary, or just whenever to bring some more money in for the musicians. (Common's Resurrection & Pete Rick/Cl Smooth's Mecca)

Do you all buy remastered albums, when you already own the original, or just feel like you already paid for it once, so it is fair to download it? Does It have to have bonus tracks?

Before I listened to most my music through an IPOD, I couldn't care less, but now it kind of sucks to put shit on shuffle and hear the difference between something released 20 years ago play next to something from 2010.

I get the whole argument that boosting the volume sacrifices some sound quality from the high or low end or whatever, but have to admit the remastered albums serve their purpose.

What albums would you like to have remastered?

I just thought of this as I was looking online to replace my copy of Tribe's Low End Theory and Goodie Mobs' Soul Food. Some good stuff has been mentioned so far. Anyways, here are some albums I would like to have remastered, and am surprised have not been done already. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Public Enemy - Yo!

Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet
Public Enemy - Apocalypse 91

EPMD - All of them (I think only Strictly Business has been done so far)

Slick Rick - All of them (I think only Great Adventures has been done so far)

Eric B. & Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique

Goodie Mob - Soul Food

I think that was in 97 or something too, they could probably do even more today.

I think most of the Wu's early stuff would actually suffer from remastering because the grimy, crackled sound suits them, but OB4CL would probably benefit from remastering. I'd love to hear Mike Dean or someone of that caliber remix "Glaciers of Ice."

hiphop has never been a genre known for good sound quality, probably due to the lack of live instruments and lack of caring from the artists and producers

remasters can be good or bad, its depends on what the source is they are using to remaster and who is doing them

Nah, I think it just seems that way because so many classic albums were mastered for cassettes, making listen to them now on modern technology sound like they were recorded through pillows from an ice cream truck two blocks away.

i wish i could clean up my collection of adat and freestyle cassetes i have collected.... and sometimes intentionally-possessed to have the most comprehensive collection of freestyle and songs made prior to 1997-6 by now known artists, imprisoned thugs, gay suicidal chicken heads and message board enthusiasts

one day i plan on retiring off the sale of my archives... assuming that genre comes back into favor over the next two decades

I completely co-sign all the Native Tongues albums mentioned. All the De La stuff, Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, and the Jungle Brothers would all be great.

Organized Konfusion's Stress and Jeru's Sun Rises In The East were two obvious choices that I didn't think of, but those could use an upgrade for sure.

So why do you think everything mentioned hasn't been done already?

For the Public Enemy albums, something tells me it is 99% label beef. Those albums are all past their 20 year anniversary, except Apocalypse 91. That's when it would have made the most sense to release it if they were going to.

Why not the Tribe Called Quest albums? There has to be enough of a demand for them to turn a profit.

And they did some nice remastered deluxe releases with extra tracks for the first two Eric B. & Rakim albums, so why not the 3rd and 4th? Is there just not enough of a market for those?

I have a feeling a lot of these will never get done because record companies don't want to take a chance. Sure there are those of us that would buy these, but a lot of people would just download.

Maybe some of it is due to lost masters? Who knows.

Yeah, it's less dusty. I know that's not the first word that comes to mind about Illmatic, but there's an improvement in sound for sure.

It's an improvement to the best album ever made, so hell yeah it's worth it.

They actually just did Criminal Minded this year as a remastered 3 cd release. I haven't given it a listen yet, though.

I hope they do the same with the other albums. Checking at discogs.com, it looks like all of them have at least been remastered once since 97.

It looks like Snoop Dogg is 'creative chairman' of Priority Records now, and is helping get some old stuff remastered and re-released.
