let's talk about rappers

Post by Philaflava »

Freddie Gibbs

Many people just do not like him. A few years back he was regarded as the newest ג€œBluג€ in regards to internet hype with the exception of Mr. Electronica.

I know Thun recently made a post saying he was pretty much forgettable. I myself think he has a certain style to him very reminiscent of 2Pac, save the Hennessey and enemy shit. He isnג€™t lyrically lyrical but he has a style and a cool rap voice if you will. Take ג€œInג€ for example, he probably had the 2nd best verse and it wasnג€™t even that good but the moment he said ג€œa pair of Air Jordans and a muthafuckinג€™ attitudeג€ I was open. Cadence is a weapon.

He lacks material and when he isnג€™t freestyling over ג€™90 classics many of his tracks are indeed forgettable. But I think he has more than what most up-n-comers have and with the right producer and a little guidance he is capable of delivering dope product.

Speak about Freddie Gibbs and then after awhile (maybe a page) weג€™ll move on to the next rapper.

every time I hear him I am impressed by the way he raps but I never have the need to hear that song again.

He's like a thugged out version of Ludacris that can't write a hit song.

Gibbs is one of the "overhyped unsigned" rappers who I think is deserving of the hype. I think he is more of a lyrical miracle than people give him credit for, and couples it with a great rap voice and attitude. He has a shit-ton of material, and seems to have a good ear for beats. "Miseducation" and "Midwestblahblahblah" are better than most official albums that have dropped in the last few years. Even though his subject matter doesn't vary much, he somehow keeps it sounding fresh and seems to get good beats.

Gibbs has been out for several years now, and he seems to have found what works best for him. As trite as it may sound, he is at his best when he is rapping about guns, drugs, bitches, etc. I can definitely see how people make the 2Pac comparison, and I think he has gained momentum for his ability to turn gun rap into something more tangible for the average person. Freddie seems to do a good job of coming off like one of your homeboys, not someone who wouldn't give you the time of day if you saw him out somewhere. I remember copping "Live From Gary Indiana Part 2" back in '06 based off a recommendation from a friend, and although his sound is a little more polished these days, it's still my favorite piece of work by him. I'm not sure if he'll be able to remain relevant though, too many boring songs and I feel like he tries too hard to take the fast-rapping route. He puts on a good live show though, for what its worth...

I gave what I think was his last mixtape a try after reading the hype on here and wasn't that impressed. he wasn't terrible but I ended up skipping to the next song after a minute of each one to see if got any more interesting. He didnt. Sound quality and beats were shitty aswell which probably didnt help.

Rappers needs to start being in groups again. It can make a less charismatic/talented/interesting rapper seem a lot a better when they're playing off another MC and not having to hold down a whole song/album on their own.

What step one said can't be stressed enough. These new 'blograppers' would be great in hypothetical groups. Gibbs, Vado, Meyhem Lauren, Kendrick Lamar, Curtains, Superstar Camel, Fashawn, Marc Spe 'q' something, Danny Brown, Chuuwee, even KRIT, put these guys together, mix and match however you like, and they might not force my itchy skip-finger.

Str8 Killa No Filla was catching a lot of hype so I checked that. Haven't listened since.

What do guys consider to be his best songs, mixtapes/albums, appearances, etc?

str8 killa mixtape is a pretty meh barometer, it was meant to capitalize of his building hype so its bloated with filler and tons of unnecessary guest features. plus the way they released it was retarded - paid ep + free mixtape choked with overwhelming dj drops + the dj free version that dropped a month later - the tape wasn't good enough to warrant keeping track of all the permutations. it's a shame too, there's a really good compilation that could be made from the best parts of the EP combined with a judiciously edited version of the dj-less mixtape and a few other songs that came out at the time that weren't included.

miseducation of freddie gibbs and midwesternboxframecadillacmusic are both much better, and there's tons of good shit on his earlier mixtapes too. cosign whoever gave credit to live from gary indiana 2, the second half of that especially is really good

Are there DJ-free versions of his earlier mixtapes? Str8 Killa was kinda disappointing to start with, but pretty much like all of it when there are no DJ drops. Maybe not all of it, but a lot of it.

What other tracks did he release around that time that didn't make the album? I heard "Something New" which was dope, but what else was there?

Is this a general rapper thread or a Gibbs thread?

Title befuddles me.

Yup. Blu needs a group. Maybe Blu + Fashawn + Planet Asia?

Has Blu done anything north of horrific since the album with exile?

Havent gotten into Bronson yet. Wheres the best place to start?

Gibbs midwest and miseducation are great mixtapes, but nothing hes done suggests he can make a great album. If that matters anymore, which im not sure it does. If he made another mixtape as good as those id check it.

Blu hasn't touched and never will that Exile album.

The best place to start with AB is prolly

Gibbs is cool, he's got a commanding delivery and a usually standout voice. i forget the first project i heard from him but it was good for last summer, i kinda fell out after the Str8 Killa...it was ok but im just waiting for a proper album release. If anything Freddie made me a fan of Pill.

Action Bronson just makes me want to put Ghostface on. i tried numerous times to listen to his projects and each time ended with me putting on a Ghost album and being glad i did so...he's not bad tho at all.

Midwestboxblablabla was a top 5 or so song from 09, for me. That has to be said. An album full of songs like that and What It Be Like would make me a lifetime fan.
Whether to Jason of Philaflava or John Podesta, I will speak my fucking perspective openly

Dude's a rapper's rapper, I can understand the lack of faith in his mainstream appeal. A group could be interesting. Gibbs & Krit would be monstrous.

This the one that got me.
