Bugged beats. DOOM can still flow. I like it.

Really good rapping for the most part but the production mostly left me cold. I don't mind a different sound for him, but even so these beats just didn't do it for me. Winter blues is the only one that I really enjoyed on first spin and see myself coming back to often.
The album feels like a missed opportunity conceptually too, this could've been a great turn for the mythology of the character. The supervillain is now exiled and he strikes back at his nefarious rap enemies from across the pond, etc... But there's not much of that here, it's mostly just some good verses over meh beats. Maybe I need to give it a little time to settle in

I think so. I actually think the beats are pretty good, but I can see how they wouldn't be for everyone. Either way, I do think there's some interesting stuff going on with DOOM on the album in terms of the development of his persona. There are a few songs with the kind of vibe you were talking about, but there's also some stuff that really digs into agoraphobia and OCD in a humorous way. I find them interesting in light of all the DOOMbots at shows and the lack of public appearances, etc in recent years.

the beats are sick but other than banished they played it safe..
second half lets down a bit maybe but still a great album

I want to like it because that is the cool thing to do, but these beats just don't jive well with him. I'd much rather but on the boards but if it must be a guest than Jake One is fine. I like JJ but not with Doom.

Album is a fucking train wreck. Couldn't even get through the whole thing. That shit might fly over in island, but I ain't having that.

yeah this is garbage to me. The beats sound super cheap and even the ones that are aaight are completely inappropriate for doom. "Banished" is easily one of the top-ten worst Doom songs ever.Willie B wrote:agree wholeheartedlyRandom Sample wrote:Album is a fucking train wreck. Couldn't even get through the whole thing. Re: Doom is working again! Or so he says. Thom Yorke btw.
Had it on repeat since it arrived in the post on Saturday.
I like it, but 50% of the album washes over me. As a package, it all feels nicely crafted and considered, but I just find it a bit... boring. The beats are nice enough, but are all bit monotone. There is no pace to it. The guest spots are either not very good or just don't really fit. I find myself tuning it out after a couple of tracks.
I will persevere with it though, because I'm a fanboy.

can someone hit me up with a link?
Re: Doom is working again! Or so he says. Thom Yorke btw.
MF Doom is still a pretty good rapper but the beats on this are a real turn off. The hipsters will love it though.

I'm really digging this. I like it a whole lot more than Born Like This.

as a rapper with lyrics as dense as dooms yet
you didn't even listen to the whole album and you think you heard it

i don't think anybody has a problem with the lyrics though
if these same lyrics were over different beats it could be a great album. somebody needs to do a remix of this shit asap

Is this even up for contention? The beats are fucking wack. Off the top of my head, Rhymin' Slang for example; the drums are tinny as fuck and the synths are completely flat. The majority of this album sounds like it was produced on an iPhone.

This albums inconsistency is consistent with most of his post-Doomsday career imo. I agree he shouldve gone all in with exiled villain shit though, all that talk of him sitting in his hotel room watching Minder and Open All hours got my hopes up itd have more english ppl lulz

I love Doom, I am not discrediting him at all, but the beats are awful. It makes the album not listenable.
how about Madlib and call it Madvillain 2.drizzle wrote:somebody needs to do a remix of this shit asap
Re: Doom is working again! Or so he says. Thom Yorke btw.
I agree with that. "Operation: Doomsday!" is MF Doom's peak. It's all downhill from there.Larry2times wrote:This albums inconsistency is consistent with most of his post-Doomsday career imo.
Some good shit on Vaudeville Villain, MM Food, Madvillainy and Take Me To Your Leader though. Just not as strong as Doomsday. Then he did that awful thing with Danger Mouse, the beats on this are horrible.

Re: Doom is working again! Or so he says. Thom Yorke btw.
I was planning on writing a review of this since I'm a DOOM stan, but it really didn't grab me one way or the other.
If I hadn't tempered my expectations, I'd probably like this album a lot less. That said, it's no better than 'good' and is nowhere near an album of the year contender. Beats are average, There are some I really like, but it feels like Jarel tried to copy the sounds of DOOM's past albums rather than just doing his thing. The stuttering drums and samples are signatures on many of his albums, but that style doesn't mesh well with Jarel's musical production. The rhymes are good, not great, and he copies the Born Like This model of having 20 minutes or so of rhyming mixed with random features and instrumentals.
Nothing like his earlier albums (even Dangerdoom) which were jam packed with creative flows and concepts.
I don't hate it because I wasn't expecting much, but Born Like This is the only album of his you can compare it to. I think it's a more consistent and cohesive album than Born Like This, but nothing on it is touching songs like Gazillion Ear, Absolutely, and Cellz.

too bad the collaboration at hand isn't as seamless as the editing in this vid

Re: Doom is working again! Or so he says. Thom Yorke btw.
Yeah, I don't wanna do a track by track review of VV and MV. Basically VV is a solid album with good production and a terrific rapper. But still some of the beats didn't age very weel IMO due to that electronica sound that was all the rage 10 years ago. At least MF Doom didn't make an entire album with Prefuse 73 on the boards (the perfect collab for Chocolate Industries haha). We should consider ourselves lucky.Matthew wrote:BadLT wrote:I agree with that. "Operation: Doomsday!" is MF Doom's peak. MV is overrated to me. Some really good songs on it, but one third of the beats just don't make it for me. Plus I don't care for the instrumental tracks and the Quasimoto song. I know a lot of people consider it to be Doom's masterpiece but I think it's because these guys just discovered Doom with that album. Makes me feel old.
So yeah I think "some good shit" is pretty accurate.
