He had some really bad management. I remember RM or somebody wanted to interview him for Q&A and his manager demanded $3K for the interview. I'm sure he missed out on a lot of opportunities because he had coked out middle men answering for him.drizzle wrote:got hooked on strip club baitA Kid wrote: i agree with Scaramanga wtf happened to him?

Are you sure those were his managers? I kinda heard some crazy stories from people I know who approached him (or people posing as him online) that he wanted 5K for a verse, and like 7K to do a show, plus publishing...Philaflava wrote:He had some really bad management. Not saying I know what the facts are because from what I hear he also is a pretty testy guy...funny thing is, he was the first person I ever interviewed. It was up in the Rawkus offices back in 1996, I think. He was draped out, crazy jewelry, which surprised me at the time because I did not expect him to be styling that hard. Was real chill and easy to talk to, so I am not sure what happened but the more recent stories I heard, dude's responses to anyone questioning his astronomical fees made Shabazz Palaces emails to you look like a professional form letter.

Juelz Santana's solo work never really did what it could have, although I will argue that his first album is better than its rep. I could see him commiting suicide if this new Dip Set album never materializes.
Chamillionaire, other than an occasional banger ala "Denzel Washington" or that awesome impression thing has never done much for me since leaving Swisha House. At least he left us with a ton of pre-major material to jam on. He needs to do an album with Paul again just to save whatever face he has left.
Bohagon is still bullshitting.
Fabo needs to stop fucking around and drop the best album in rap history already.

Funny thing is, couple years ago I would have had Roc Marciano up in this thread. Just goes to show, I s'pose. If only the "great rapper who you spent years following and had pretty much given up on, suddenly puts out incredible album" was not such a rare event.

I always wished Saukrates woulda reached new heights....maybe if he woulda linked up with MBF he coulda...
Co-sign on Trife too. Still one of my favorite rappers. I guess a good question to ask here though is what defines "living up to their expectation"? Putting out a platinum album? I don't think there's really any place for dope MC's in the mainstream these days...pretty much anyone that's on the radio nowadays is fucking garbage with the exception of guys that blew up LONG before any of these new jacks were around. I just don't really see how far a dope MC can really go these days...is it even possible? Like what would make Breeze live up to his expectations? Clear Blue Sky's is one of the best albums I've heard in a MINUTE. Even some of the more well known underground rappers could arguably not have lived up to their expectations since a lot of people still don't know about em. So are we basing this on someone who started out dope and then started sucking? Or someone who you thought had potential and just quit the game without putting out more shit? Cuz to me Breeze exceeds any expectations anyone should have of an MC.

I think it is pretty clear that the OP means coming close to or meeting the potential you saw for that individual artist when they debuted. Obviously Brewin made great music. I think people feel like he was capable of making a classic solo record, as well as putting out much more great music than he did.siLLy KiD wrote:I always wished Saukrates woulda reached new heights....maybe if he woulda linked up with MBF he coulda...

No one is mad at Prince Among Thieves or CBS. They are both great. But if you looked at his work since then, it's pretty clear that he has not done a whole lot, for the reasons everyone has already hashed out earlier in this thread.

he could've put out a solo album
or an ep
or even more than 1 or 2 singles
basically anything that focused on him specifically and allowed him to actually show off his talent and potential, instead of placing it into a context of a group dynamic where he handily outshines everyone around him anyway

I got you...in that case- add Asher Roth to the list...COOLEHMAGAZINE wrote:I think it is pretty clear that the OP means coming close to or meeting the potential you saw for that individual artist when they debuted. I like it quite a bit. I always wish Chains was longer and some tracks didn't quite do it for me but he beat jay to 30something, and Liar, Liar was my shit too. Matter fact, I need to give that album a spin in full again, it has been a while.Thun wrote:Am I the only one who really likes Use Your Confusion?
Still, speaking for myself, it UYC was no replacement for a Brewin album that until recently I was always led to believe was coming. Specifically, High Water Music was supposed to be releasing it and then...no.
Juggs are really cool people though, and when I went to interview them way back when in the BX, I had a great time. I have nothing but respect for both albums they did and them as people and artists.

Once DJ Spinna at High Water called it quits on the Brewin solo, I decided it was time to stop holding out hope.Thun wrote:Is there a bargain we can strike with a deity that will bring us a Brewin' solo album?
Like, can we sacrifice the thirty or so vapid sub-Curren$y "swag" rappers that are written about in blogs to a volcano?
Between that heavy of a 9-5 job (if you have friends who teach, you know what I mean), kids, family and Brewin's notorious perfectionism...it's just not ever going to happen.

haven't listened to it since it dropped, but i remember it did have some good stuff. i'm guessing the negative reaction was due more to people's expectations than the actual quality of it. it's probably due for a re appraisalThun wrote:Am I the only one who really likes Use Your Confusion?
there was also some random ep he did, or maybe it was juggaknots as a group. had some freestyles and whatnot, i don't remember teh details. it had some good stuff too.
but non of this is exactly on par with a solo album that he could've done, theoretically speaking.
who knows, his solo might've been completely underwhelming. or something resembling monch's solo career, where the output often clashes with people's expectations of it. we'll never know though, and that's a shame.
