There's only one problem. That would actually make sense.

I kind of agree, but at the same time I feel that with DR, followed up by a classic album, and perhaps another 1 or 2 good albums, it can sort of erase his legacy as someone who is one of the best but can never figure out how to make consistently good albums. That is of course wishful thinking, but just saying.

You would be surprised how many people still support and follow Nas. It's hard to tell on the internet sometimes because he is by far and away the most criticized and hated rapper, but heads still love him. But I think the people who still follow him need him to make a good album, or else they are going to join the rest who have given up on him.

i dunno if he's the most hated. That would probably be someone like Budden.
The people who criticize Nas are (I think) fans/ex-fans who are frustrated with his track record

Lol @ Nasir Jones needing to "keep his name out there"

No.

Nas is still making the types of albums he wants, genuinely attempting to say something relevant, working with whoever he wants, all while on a major label.

Oh, and his albums sell.

He forgot about the "if-only-he-would-make-illmatic-again" crowd a long time ago. If only they could forget about him as easily.

You misunderstood what I was saying. Nas does not need those people, nor will they ever be converted to thinking anything he does without DJ Premier is any good.

I dont need to him to make another Illmatic I just want to him to make something that sounds good and isnt accompanied - and overshadowed - by an overtly contrived concept created with sole intention of getting publicity: "look its my double album!" "hey guys, Hip Hop Is Dead! Discuss", "Im gonna call my album Nigger unless the record company tell me not to", "check me out, I did an album with a reggae dude despite never displaying any reggae influence in my music whatsoever"

Its not like he's "making the albums he wants" on some Outkast tip and really pushing the boundaries of the genre

Just find some decent fucking beats and rap some shit over them (which I guess could also mean another Illmatic). Its not complicated.

Give up on him. It's clear he is never going to make the type of rap albums you want again. No harm done.

I happen to think that you can make an album with a "reggae dude" without having to have had reggae influences in the past. It's not like it's a cash-in or something, obviously he was motivated by something in their artistic connection. For better or worse.

I also think HHID>>IWW so yeah, I am not mad at him at all.

I understand your sentiment, I just think you should give up hope. I wish Ghostface would do an album like Supreme Clientele again, but it is not going to happen. Those are the breaks.

this

it's great that he has some different ideas and room to explore them, but none of it means dick because the execution is mostly lackluster. the problem is not the lack of illmatic repeats, it's the general mediocrity of the end product, whatever it may be. if we start excusing him based on effort we might as well go to canada.

All I want is GOOD rap albums. If he's never going make those again then its him that should give up, not me.

I wouldnt be that bothered about it if it was anyone else but he's made so much good music its just a shame he cant get his shit together.

In some people's opinions, he has made two or three of those in a row. That is why I am suggesting that perhaps this is an issue of taste. It's not as though these last 3 albums were universally derided. So maybe he is making good albums, just not good for your taste.

Nas is my fav MC by far. I find something to love on every album he has ever made. Aside from Who Killed It, I loved HHID and it is prob my 3rd fav Nas album. I don't think it is better that IWW, but I do love it, which is not a popular sentiment.

I will ALWAYS check for Nas. I don't expect him to make another Illmatic, but I know he has it in him to make another classic album. Unreleased joints, guests spots and DR prove that to me. I also love the more mature Nas that has been around these last few years and loved the way he rhymed on DR. Would love to hear more of that over ill beats.

Untitled frustrated me more than anything. 2 songs in particular. Testify and Project Roach. Dope ass beats that he should have murdered, yet he came off beyond lazy on both and the result was just terrible. Add that to Make the World Go Round and the joint about Fox and it really makes that album shitty. The Fox joint was dope and was needed but it is not a album song, much like Jay's DOA.

Anyways I am rambling. Nas is still very very dope and I can't wait for the new album.

come on man primo, extra p, and pete rock could collaborate to remix that song and put out a new video for it comprised of all of lily thai's squirting scenes and that song would still be hot garbage

hero is without a doubt one of the corniest songs of this millenium

No albums are universally derided nowadays. Therefore all albums are good and hip hop is saved?

the hook is a guilty pleasure for me, and i usually hate those sort of Nas songs, but

"This Universal apartheid
I'm hog-tied, the corporate side
Blocking y'all from going to stores and buying it
First L.A. and Doug Morris was riding wit it
But Newsweek article startled big wigs
They said, 'Nas, why is he trying it?'
My lawyers only see the Billboard charts as winning
Forgetting - Nas the only true rebel since the beginning
Still in musical prison, in jail for the flow
Try telling Bob Dylan, Bruce, or Billy Joel
They can't sing what's in their soul
So Untitled it is
I never change nothin'
But people remember this
If Nas can't say it, think about these talented kids
With new ideas being told what they can and can't spit

I can't sit and watch it
So, sh!t, I'ma drop it
Like it or not
You ain't gotta cop it
I'm a hustler in the studio
Cups of Don Julio
No matter what the CD called
I'm unbeatable, y'all"

IMO it had a good hook and a good Polow beat, it's just people (myself normally included) don't want to hear Nas making that style of music. Which is kind of the point Cooleh is highlighting I suppose.

Pretty convenient that you ignored American Gangster which is better than all 4.

hook is horrific. Really fucking bad. It couldve only been worse if Akon or some was doing it. Sounds really out of place and spoils the whole song and in some cases the 4 or 5 songs you hear after it. Its that fucking bad.
It makes 'You Owe Me' sound like 'Nas Is Like'.

I think the hook is perfect for the beat, but I also think if you put BOB, J Cole, Morgan Freeman or whoever the kids like these days instead of Nas on it, it doesn't garner anywhere near this level of contempt.

But when you're the greatest rapper of all time, you have certain shoes to fill, and there's just certain types of music people generally don't want to hear you make.

Some records qualify as universally derided IMO (Red Gone Wild, Ortiz's Free Agent, Till The Casket Drops, The Kush, The Eleventh Hour) but point taken.

My argument remains though, I can understand why he might not like the album but there is a fairly decent segment of Nas fans', hip-hop listeners and credible critics who are feeling Nas' late period work. Thus, perhaps it is more a question of "He is not making albums that interest me or provide an aesthetic I can vibe with" than it is "Nas' albums are embarrassing hack-jobs"

Or maybe not.

Either way, I stand by my statement, ultimately HHID is a more interesting, more creative album than It Was Written, while being equally well-executed on a technical level. It is one of Nas' best works.

Untitled is more hit and miss but still above average.

Distant Relatives was surprisingly good. IT was also impressive in that it was an organic thing that surely was challenging for Nas, and it actually came out, sounding relatively "uncompromised".

Is that a flawless run? No. But neither is it cause for tooth gnashing as far as I am concerned.

There are very few rappers with Nas' pedigree still a) making albums this good on a consistent basis while b) staying outside of the box of current rap expectations without being forced to remake their previous classics.

HHID is not remotely close to being anywhere near as good as IWW.That's completely absurd.
Whether to Jason of Philaflava or John Podesta, I will speak my fucking perspective openly
