ASAP Rocky Thread

blastmaster must have posted this already...If not, I don't know what to think...

Asap Rocky

I like that second beat and feel like he might be dope if he actually rapped, but that's not that in right now. I dunno, there's something really corny about the fact that he's from Harlem and rolling with a southern accent but I figure his beats and image should make him a PF favorite. Word to V-Nasty.

i've posted some of his stuff on steadyb, i'm a fan overall. this is pretty much what i know so far...

asap rocky is more or less a #based version of a dipset member, with a little screw thrown in

i'm not quite buying into the whole notion of him 'saving new york' or being the next greatest thing like some are claiming, but he might be ny's best (or the only) 'new school' rapper. if nothing else he deserves credit for being one of the very few new york rappers who managed to roll with the tide and does not desperately wish for it to be the 90s again

as far as the southern thing, the first song i've his I heard, Been Around The World, which dropped about a year ago, did have a certain smooth southern trunk funk quality to it. i was a bit surprised he is from harlem. not all his shit is like that though

purple swag is pretty cool, wassup is probably my favorite so far

he also raps over bittersweet symphony and the raw version of the beat that ended up as G-side's 'pictures', which is all pretty cool

a french blog made a comp of whatever of his is available, i have it expanded with a few new things that dropped since the comp was made, if somebody wants it

his album comes out at the end of july i think

the guy who runs realniggatumblr, who also occasionally posts here, knows a lot more about this as he was one of his earliest supporters. i'm sure he will gladly fill in/correct the details i missed if he sees the thread

comparing him to vnasty is rather glib and reactionary though

Not the biggest fan of the blatant carpet bagging of "Purple Swag" (cowabunga fingers vs. hook em horns etc), but I dig on this kid's shit pretty hard.

"Get High" is thee shit.

groovy

i've been trying to decide if this samples moments of love, and if that's the case if this should be considered as a rip off of the Naturals beat

i'll d/l it to give him a shot.

on a somewhat unrelated note.. how come it seems like screwed/chopped music is making more waves in 2010/2011 than it did in between 2006-2010?? cause it seemed like internet fascination w/ that scene was really peaking around the early/mid-2000s.. but now everyone (hipster bloggers & rappers from other regions) is getting heavier into it again?

I am relatively convinced that there is a cabal of former Danish link bloggers from the turn of the century who are now in control of a secret society commissioning people like Spaceghostpurrp and the like the create updated versions of their tape hiss obsessions and the internet just caught on.

Glib, yes. Reactionary? No, I got no problem with the guy. None of these songs are wack, but ultimately they don't do a whole lot for me. Maybe I have not heard the right things...some of the beats are cool though.

Saying that every other new cat in NY is trying to be on some 90's shit is actually reactionary though.

Elucid
Homeboy Sandman
Action Bronson
Mr. ExQuire
Despot
Das Racist
Cavalier

Not that everyone in that list is the same, but all of these are NEW significant "non major label" rappers coming out of NY right now. None of them is trying to lay down some traditional boom bap in any real sense of the word.

that's one of the main group of (new) promoters from the past 2 years

- 'the fader approved' club djs who mix r&b/rap w/ "future" dance music (e.g. ghe20 goth1k, witchhouse producers)
- r&b singers who are either drinking lots of cough syrup or pretending to (e.g. the weeknd, drake)
- swag rappers (e.g. spaceghostpurrp, ofwgkta)

i like all of the respective groups.. it just seems like the interest has really begun to rise over the past few years after already gaining a lot of exposure less than 5 years earlier

kind of surprised the bay mob rappers haven't done much experimenting with screwed music.. consider how 9/10 of them rap about drinking "bo" in every single song now

interesting.
Not sold on the rapping quite yet but I'm digging the beats he's rocking over. Definitely curious to peep more.

iight being dat i gotta play the political role now imma just use this board as a way to voice my wave one time

-deep purple was a compilation of really old ass tracks all of em was recorded between 08-09

-asap rocky is not bitin aesop rock...asap stands for accumulate status and power it was an uptown crew b4 all that hence why every member has da ASAP in front of their name...we a bunch of blacks n ricans from harlem i dont recall any beemers ridin up lenox jammin dat aesop rock with the windows rolled down

-purple swag is unfinished the final version will have a feature on it

-rocky's album will primarily be produced by clams, beautiful lou, and asap ty (the 17 year old dat produced peso and purple swag)

-the whole bitin h-town shit is retarded we are products of the internet era we were 10 when napster was gettin wavy we werent subjected to dj kay slay freestyles our whole life of course u gon seek inspiration from other regions...i dont see jay electronica catchin flake from being from NO but sounding like killah priest...or Lil' B when he does all dat boom bap shit...its not a problem until a NY'er decides to pay homage to another region
