Best under-appreciated Producer of the 90s

Post by Gyangsta 4 Life »

1. They debuted/"came up"/were active in the 90s.
2. During the Rakwus/HHI/Moolah's-P&B-thread years you either despised them or didn't know who they were.

Feel free to add on or pick one from the list. Maybe a couple more candidates and we could make this a poll?

Peace to K-Def and Lord Digga, those were my first two choices.

Also, Nick Wiz, Rockwilder, Clark Kent, T-Ray, Jon Adler.

Don't sleep on Swizz. I agree that a lot of his early production sucked but he did have some bangers and an original sound. And he improved tremendously in the 2000s. Game's "Scream On Em" and Fat Joe's "Drop" are good examples of fully actualized Swizz.

Clark Kent and Dame Grease are excellent picks as well. Can't believe I forgot them.

So ... we're talking strictly producers who started out in the middleground but eventually had some crossover success? Your criteria was confusing.

If that's the case, the answer is very easily Clark Kent.

My initial post was pretty half-baked. Any producer from the 90s that is generally disparaged or relatively unknown (as a producer), but has at least 1 or 2 joints that everyone should know, counts.

Then K-Def it is.

While I can admit he's had a few dope beat sin his career, there are few worse producers to me that late 90's/early 2000 swizz beats. Dude was AIDS with a Triton keyboard.

Changing the rules to include producers who were fucking great but who almost never get any mention anymore:

No I.D.

If it weren't for him Common would be eating quinoa in a converted tool shed behind a duplex instead of in a mansion.

JuJu is another guy who people generally acknowledge as good, but who, for whatever reason, just never really gets talked about.

No one ever talks about Afrika Islam.

Kut Masta Kurt is under rated too.

KMK was really dope but didn't have much range. After the Masters of Illusion album he kinda fell off IMO.

These are good picks/justifications for your odd Al Tariq fixation.

Yes, and Swizz Beats it's not. No way is he under appreciated or unknown.

But I like the thread Gyangsta, good shit.

I'll do my best to not go off on a TROY type tangent and not mention the regulars.
