Good times, remember watching that in one of the original :phila: Danny Brown threads.
Danny Brown’s debut album Old debuted at No. 17 on the US Billboard 200, selling 15,000 copies in its first week.
That's good right? Anyway, still listening to this, doesn't have any of my favorite DB songs on it, and I still would rather listen to the Hybrid, but I think it's his best album. Been mentioned obviously, but if he'd kept it to:
Side A (Old) [prod. Paul White]
The Return [ft. Freddie Gibbs] [prod. Paul White]
25 Bucks [ft. Purity Ring] [prod. Corin Roddick]
Gremlins [prod. Oh No]
Dope Fiend Rental [ft. Schoolboy Q] [prod. Skywlkr]
Torture [prod. Oh No]
Lonely [prod. Paul White]
Clean Up [prod. Paul White]
Red 2 Go [prod. Oh No]
Side B (Dope Song) [prod. Rustie]
Dip [prod. Skywlkr]
Smokin & Drinkin [prod. A-Trak & JMIKE]
Kush Coma [ft. A$AP Rocky and Zelooperz] [prod. Skywlkr]
Float On [ft. Charli XCX] [prod. Frank Dukes]
Shit would have been just about perfect.

Break It unlocks something in women they previously didn't know existed. I dropped it at a house party this weekend and was amazed at the reaction it got. So much shake.

subtract the singing from 25 Bucks. Add ODB.

this shit's the only thing I've been listening to since its release.

15000 is not that good, it was expected to sell more technically the record under-perfomed. For comparison, I think Earl did 40000

Which doesn't necessarily mean much since it can still accumulate sales over time, and the dude probably makes most of his money from tours and whatever else.

i didn't even know it was available on CD until a few days after released. Fool's Gold mainly just deals with vinyl and digital.

i'm taking this sales vs expectations numbers from a buddy who writes/edits at XXL. they have a staff pool predicting album sales, based on numbers for other similarly popular underground rappers (hence the earl comparison) they all had Old at about 30k+

I don't see how Earl is a fair comparison. Definitely some crossover in their fanbase, but Earl seems way more popular. Don't OF mixtapes and Tyler albums sell like 100K? They got those Adult Swim kids, and he's got 3 times as many twitter followers which means everything.

Their target demo is very similar i think. Hard to say if Earl is empirically more popular but his album was definitely more anticipated, yet Brown's album was actually received far better upon release by both critics and fans. And for an album on a label like fools gold, that has met with universal acclaim, 15000 is not a brick but it lower than could be expected.

Number actually seems high to me. I know fuck all about this but doesn't it all boil down to distro?
Plus, correct me if I'm wrong but Old is available free, at least streaming, whereas you actually have to look for a rip of Doris if you want that for free.

Doris was also available for streaming, and both leaked early.

You guys are really making way too much of the Earl comparison, that was simply an example of sales by an artist with similar fanbase and status. It's not really a 1:1 competition between them

IDK the particulars but Fools Gold seems pretty well set as far as infrastructure/distribution. They're pretty big for an independent label. It's not like it dropped on a record label started by a blog or something.

Danny doesn't have the ride or die OF kiddies fanbase with tons of expendable income though. That probably has more to do with it than anything.

I always thought of danny as being in the action bronson range of popularity and then the OF kids and asap rocky on the next empirical level of popularity.

Danny got a Q & A page in this month's playboy. It was short, but good to see his name in there.

Who here has got access to that average concert asking price site? Is it SK? Not that that would conclusively settle anything, but it'd be a nice point of reference.

Based on the venues I've seen him play, I'd guess Danny is making $5000 plus a night for a headlining gig at the very least. Especially if he's selling them out and getting money on the back end. He could possibly be pulling 5 figures per show in some markets. I'd actually guess Earl makes less than him cause he doesn't really perform as a solo artist like danny does. OF seems to do shows as a crew and that means a huge split of the money.

Only barely related to Danny, here's the new interactive video for Bob Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone' (which is hands down the best music video of the year) - http://video.bobdylan.com/

Danny is on channel 122.
