Who Do You Regret Sleeping On (nh) ?

Post by peanut butter »

Everyone has those artists that they have ignored or missed out on for way too long. And eventually after becoming familiar with the back catalog of music missed, one may think "what the fuck was I doing all this time?"

For me, it's Currensy. Without ever really giving him a fair shot, I just wrote Spitta off as another standard, subpar Southern trap star. And though there are probably some who would argue that I was right, I would counter by telling those people that they are faggots. Currensy is one of the most consistent, creative and listenable rappers out today. I've become pretty alienated from rap over the past few years, but I never hesitate to checkout the newest Currensy album. Luckily he seemingly drops something new every other week, so that helps too in terms of staying relevant. But anyways, his laidback smoker style paired with possessing one of the best ear for beats makes me wish I would have been on board since day one. And since revisiting the stuff I missed the first time around, I have noticed his progression and growth as an artist. This makes me wish even more that I would have got on at the ground floor.

Who is it for you?

I didn't pay attention to Mic Terror because of how gay his name is, but he is now one of my favorite Midwest dudes.

Billy Woods. I had heard his name for years and even used to get spammed by Backwoodz records. I think because of said spam, I ignored him. That was dumb of me.

At the moment, I'm totally sleeping on freddie gibbs but the verse he kicks on "Scottie Pippen" is fucking great. I'd like to peep more of his shit but don't really know where to start.

^ is that an album title or literal? I'm assuming the latter but it would be a funny album title.

Lol. Not an album. Though it would be the second best new album title after Jayo Felony's forthcoming release, which is tentatively scheduled to be called "Don't Get Meatballed."

i didn't realize how good of a lyricist he was. extremely creative with concepts and different styles.

i dismissed him after hearing lightening bolt as my first impression. now good sun is one of my favorite albums of last year, and still in rotation. i even went back and bought all his back catalog.

I can definitely cosign the Curren$y, I didn't get into him til Covert Coup, then some over his older stuff started growing on me. It took me a while to get around to This Ain't No Mixtape, and that was a big mistake.

Scaramanga's another one for me. I'd hear him here and there, but until a couple years ago I had no I idea how much material he had out there...all of it's great.

miseducation of freddie gibbs

or

midwestboxframecadillacmusic

theres some mixtapes before and some stuff after, but the two named above are what really kickstarted his internet buzz

unfortunately a lot of his best work lately has been on random songs so there's not a specific more recent project i can point you toward

Mostly a lot of older stuff that I can't be bothered to listen to.

J Dilla, maybe? I only found out who he was right after he had died.
That sucked.

I don't suppose someone rounds these parts with good taste has made a "best of" mix that I could upload?

8Ball and MJG, my first exposure to them was the single off their 'In Our Lifetime' album and then the 8Ball solo album with the Fred Durst video. Really didn't like it and didn't really check for them until a few years back when a music store was liquidating and I bought 'Comin' Out Hard' after hearing how it was a classic. Really regret not having that album in my life sooner.

i dunno about mic terror but Woods has tons of material. It's a bit daunting. Peep the thread about him. There's a mixtape of his shit on there that's dope, as well as the Super Chron flight brothers albums.

Really??? I tried to listen to that and wasn't feeling it. At times it sounded like he was blatantly biting DOOM without the wittiness. The beats were pretty good, but it sounded like someone who had all the technical shit down, but didn't have much to say.

I was late on Currensy - didnt check for him until Covert Coup dropped but havent stopped listening to it since.

I think I was quite late on Black Milk but I wasnt really online at all for about 18 months around 06-07. Really liked Popular Demand and Tronic though. The last one not so much.

That sucked.[/quote]

So did most people, but that didn't stop them from wearing "dilla changed my life" shirts.

I slept on G-Side for a while, and now they're like my favorite rap group (thanks to drizzle).

no, he's the Houston rap legend who raps about being superhuman and tells multiple stories at the same time.

Kind of felt like when people brought him up on the forum, he got shitted on before folks gave his music a chance. Then again, I rocked a show with him way back so, seeing him live is some dope shit. Always thought he was nice.

I'll have to agree with K-Rino. And for a while, Motion Man. I never knew that his voice when I hear him on songs with Kool Keith.
