80s/90s Songs That Have Gotten Much Better With Age

Post by Thun »

Don't just list songs from that era that you still love.

This is for those songs that weren't necessarily huge enormous universal classics, and are mostly forgotten, but have aged very well and should be reconsidered.

Pretty much everything by the Tuff Crew and most songs by Three Times Dope

Tuff Crew "Old School Jackin">>>>>>>>>>>>

<object width="420" height="345"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/prqYVUCQ9Uc?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/prqYVUCQ9Uc?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="345" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

A.Z. (Mobstyle) "What's Going On Black"
Top Quality "Magnum Opus"
The Future Sound "Lady/What's a Bro To Do"
UMCs "Morals"
Brand Nubian "Word Is Bond"
Poor Righteous Teachers "Word Iz Life"
Threat "The Whore Said It's Yours"
Kurious, Sadat X, Mike G "Mansion and a Yacht"
Red Hot Lover Tone "#1 Player"
Style "The Assassinator"
Sid and B-Ton "Death Wish"
Beastie Boys "Root Down" (Prince Paul remix)
Ya'll So Stupid "Bowl Of Soul"
Saafir "Light Sleeper (og version)"
Large Professor "Spacey"
K-Solo "Drums Of Death"
Too Poetic "God Made Me Funky"
Positive K "Step Up Front" (3 Heineken Remix)

Add on.

all the schooly d songs with random classic rock samples

granted they were already great, but as i got older and mildly smarter i got a whole new appreciation for the way he competely subverted them to his own means

Definitely. I came back to this thread to make a very similar post. Dude was light years ahead of his time, and still is.

growin up broke in the south listening to hip hop in the late 80s i can say that the only song listed that i've even heard was that root down track when i bought the ep in 1996 or whenever it came out.

of course, this being the internet, i can now find all these songs and probably say they're great.

most of my 80s and 90s raps knowledge came from mtv and bet and radio singles.

so as much as ive heard of tuff crew since i started reading internet rap boards in the last 10 years, i can't say i've ever heard their songs.

i'm a shitty kind of rap fan.

I honestly think that EPMD's "Business As Usual" and Business Never Personal" have got better with age...should this not be a T.R.O.Y. thread Thun?

co-sign on the 3XD and Tuff Crew and all of your choices...Sid told me he was going to get me some unreleased Sid & B-Tonn tracks at some stage.

Kam-Neva Again LP is another album that has gotten better with age to me as well.

Oh and I feel Chubb Rock is one of the most unheralded rappers of the late 80s/early 90s.

His first 2 albums are full of exceptional rapping even tho I never cared much for his production.

Chubb Rock could spit with anyone although I can never think of Chubb Rock any more without wondering if he still owes Prince Paul $2200.

Not at all. In fact, they were awful to me. I try to block them out and just enjoy Rock's rhymes.

and I didn't even realize Tuff Crew was in Thun's first post. Wow.

EPMD- "Crossover"???

Most people consider them a Top 10 rap group ever and it's arguably their biggest hit!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossover_(song)
The song was also certified gold by RIAA, becoming the group's only single to accomplish that feat.
I like Philly basketball, Boston baseball, and New York rap.

A lot of Compton's Most Wanted shit. I wasn't hip to MC Eiht until WE COME STRAPPED, so going back to the CMW shit has been great.

"Word Is Bond" by Brand Nubian is an excellent choice.

Paris - break the grip of shame, devil made me do it, days of old
Killah Priest - tai chi

could also be attributed exactly to the fact they werent as exposed as some certified classics and so i havent heard them as often.

agree on the Coup

that magnum opus joint is terrible. i hate its existence and the fact that i bought the album because of PMDs co-sign and the "dark" album cover
