might be right I have to go back and check that one again, I thought it had some shaky beats but also some bangers, been a while with that, I agree though, this isn't incredible and for me it has some cringe points

Not my favourite by any stretch, but a great addition to his catalogue with loads of replay value. Aside from Trojan Horse, which I already skip.

I'd agree. Would say the order is the below.

Reloaded
Marcberg
Pimpire
RR1
Behold
RR2
Marci

Marci is the only one that I'd say is sub-par.

Anyone got an idea what this is?

https://www.fatbeats.com/products/dj-mu ... no-kaos-cd

Producer and founding member of Cypress Hill, DJ Muggs and NY’s finest, Roc Marciano announce they have joined for a collaborative album titled KAOS set for release via Soul Assassins Records.

KAOS is a 10-song score made to soundtrack an upcoming feature film coming in Spring 2019. The film follows two childhood friends, Muggs and Roc Marci, who were brought up in different areas of New York: Hempstead, Long Island and Flushing, Queens. After a significant amount of time spent apart, they are reunited after Muggs serves out a 10-year prison bid. With hopes to rule the streets once again, the duo act out in ‘kaos’ towards anyone who tries to get in their way.

Shit is really, really, really, really good. Muggs work is next level and Marci is Marci, this shit is lush, audio 70's blaxploitation steez. Rolls Royce thru the end of the album is a crazy stretch of songs. Roc's most accessible album, at least in this era.

I love them, Caught A Lick is the one that immediately comes to mind. Kinda what I was getting at when I said it was his most accessible album. Not vintage Marci per say, but definitely the song I would play for a modern hip hop fan who's never heard of Roc.

Behold
Kaos
RR2

Three albums of this quality in one year this late into one's career is almost unprecedented. Only comparison that comes to mind is DOOM with Madvillainy, MM Food and VV2 in 2004. And the latter two don't stand up to Take Me to Your Leader and VV released the year prior.

Like this album a lot. Approach reminds me a little of the Return of the Mac album that Alchemist did - long passages of samples, almost like Roc is rapping over songs rather than intricately produced beats. I think it works. Enjoy the trappy sounding cuts. Roc plays the kids at their own game, but with his own little spin.

I think the trappy songs are a fun experiment here but they're novelties. And of all the stylistic experiments he's attempted this year, those are probably my least favorite.

I don't think either those beats or the style of rapping are favorable to what Marci does best, especially Caught a Lick. He needs room to chain intricate strings of bars, he does not get that room here. This flattens his lyrics, without the space to be ornate some of the stuff he says sounds banal.

He has already said he is dying to make a crossover club smash. I haven't checked this out yet as I am waiting for the YouTube leak at this point but I wonder how close he is getting...

I agree with much of drizzle said there. I'd say his singing on Dark Horse is much more successful in terms of its pop sensibility at least to my ears.

Some of what you said, though, I think has more to do with the beat than with Roc's bars. Honestly, I prefer the beat selection on both of the other albums he released this year. Maybe not so oddly, the most melodic, lightest, more uncharacteristic Muggs beats seem to suit Roc best. And trap is as much a stretch for him if as it is for Roc, perhaps more so.
