Awful Records (Ethereal, Keith Charles Spacebar, Father etc)

Post by Versive »

I was put on to Ethereal's free 2011 album Abstractica by one of the Shabazz Palaces threads. Just recently came across Keith Charles' BeforeCommonEra.

For fans of Lil B, Shabazz Palaces, glitch-hop and to a lesser extent Count Bass D...

Only listened to this once. So far so good.

23 songs, lots of skits, instros, a few misses in there, but on 2nd or 3rd listen I can dig it.

That ethereal shit is pretty good.

He reminds me more of a rich man's Tyler the Creator than Lil B though.

Who makes the beats on this stuff? I love the vibe, I don't know how they're getting it to sound like it does, but it's got a unique quality to it. Beautiful music to do drugs to. After checking the vids Keith Charles really stood out because of his conversational flow, so I'm checking his album first and it's really fuckin' good so far.

Drugs are bad mmmkay. Uh, I think Ethereal does a lot of them (the beats). Not really sure though.

Guess I found an answer to my question, you can see the production credits below, looks like Ethereal and KeithCharles both produce, but Introspective Minds produced the majority. They're definitely all on the same tip though because the album's very cohesive. The Ethereal album is pretty sweet too, but the KeithCharles joint really impressed me. BlowinO's is the cut.

Just peep anything from my above post. Beats are insane, hard to believe there's not more of a buzz around these guys.

yes

i like the ethereal a lot, aside from when he goes too far into dnb territory. abstractica is one of the best official debuts of the year i think. i like him more than the other dude actually

you guys should check out thier collabo album called 'watch the couch'

:meh: and at times :ohsh:. inconsistent but something is there

on a sidenote i really wanted to like the shabazz palaces joint but butterfly's voice was too grating for me, gave it another listen randomly the other night, and it is awesome. don't know what i was thinking

i fucking LOVE this shit, butterfly over some fuckin anti-pop consortium with more rhythm and a tone change ass beat

I figured you would have blogged about this stuff, so I checked last night and found that Watch The Couch album, thanks. You really like Ethereal better than KeithCharles though? After listening a little more, while all the beats are crazy regardless of project, Ethereal comes off a little corny on the mic (calling himself the supervillain probably doesn't help his cause with me). While he may have more charisma that KeithCharles at this point, I think Charles is pretty clearly the better MC.

I agree that Keith Charles is far superior on the mic. Keeping in mind that drizzle is/was obsessed with Lil B I can understand why he'd like Ethereal more. People who are immediately dismissing Ethereal's rhymes should go back though. Like I said, it took a few listens for me to fully appreciate, not that he's ultra-advanced or anything, it's just that kind of style.

Im digging their music mos def, but I notice Etheral is kinda obssesed with Odd Future, He distinctively quotes and calls 2 members by name (Domo & Mike G.) i mean its obvious they may be an influence for his style.

After several thoro listens, I can easily say that both Etheral and Spacebar's albums are dopeness. Some abstract vibes with a hint of consciousness in the lyrics. Im digging this shit alot. However, I did find Watch The Throne very underwhelming.

Is there any other shit from the Introspective Minds camp I should be up on? Cause these 2 cats impressed.

I'm late to this party, but that Spacebar record is some excellent Memorial Day weekend music. Any word on what he and Ethereal are doing next?

You should check out their affiliate Will. His too tapes are pretty good stuff with the similar Thumbs Up/Introspective Minds sound.

Honestly I wouldn't even consider KeithCharles or Ethereal to be a weird type of artist.

um, Jak is a completely different breed. he has to have his own thread. talk about random name dropping (which i'll do in my next point i'm making).

anyways, i dig what i'm hearing. whoever said that Odd Future influenced them, i can only see it a little bit. i put them more so in a group with Dom Kennedy or Pac Div before Odd Future.

Keith Charles Spacebar dropped a previously shelved follow-up to Before Common Era, as well as a new EP 10/14.

should probably merge this with the ethereal/Keith charles thread

there's some good stuff on young hot ebony and cactus jack. generally I think these guys do best when they work together in various groupings as opposed to strictly solo.

also mildly annoyed how much of the coverage focuses exclusively on Young Hot Ebony and Cactus Jack while tons of other material gets completely overlooked. eg Fader fellates the idea of Awful Records regularly but ignores most of the music that doesn't have Father on it.
