The last wave of really good UK stuff was probably around 2000-04, then grime came along, then that pretty much died when they all started rapping over Guetta style shit and doing the Top 40 thing.
These days it seems split between the older artists who are still doing the keep it real boom bap thing (some of which isnt too bad) and the more 'street' new shit. I dont like all of the following but these would be the ones who have dropped stuff recently and made some noise

Low Key
Kyza
Piff Gang
Wretch 32
The Four Owls
Stylah
Fallacy
Ramson Badbones
Roots Manuva
Klashnekoff
Jehst
Dubbledge
Reveal

Here's a mix of older stuff I knocked up a while back and post here about once a year when someone mentions UK rap.

Dizzee Rascal is cool, and actually one of the best live emcees I've ever heard. Get familiar Piff.

Step One, what ever happened to the So Solid Crew? Were they pre-Grime? I seem to remember the term Two-Step being thrown around.

I love grime and the way those guys rhyme and I can't stand UK americanized hip hop.

that first dizzee rascal album literally blew my mind. It's one of those moments when you are listening to music the kinds of which you've never heard before. the way he rapped, the way those beats are so atonal and stabbing, I still love that album a lot.

Word. I think the second Dizzee album is great too.

Tinchy is, in many ways, a terrible mc and most of what he does these days is indefensible, but his first album, Star in the Hood, is a classic to me. I find the production on it to be pretty amazing, it's a weird mix of glossy and rugged, and Tinchy does nothing to get in the way of it.

I was never a fan of Dizzee, mainly because his voice annoys the shit out of me.
He's much better as a pop star than a rapper if that makes sense. Had a few huge radio tracks and is doing very well in the mainstream.
His Newham Generals crew seem to stay doing the more underground stuff though (not really my thing either!)
The only grime dude I thought had any real skill as a rapper is Kano

Heres some other UK shit worth checking

New K-lash over 'The 900 Number'
<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9ARFwxAhexQ?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9ARFwxAhexQ?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Classic early 00s shit. Fallacy is one of the best MCs in the UK. Shame he's pretty much retired. I swear Timbaland jacked this for Luda's 'Roll Out'
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BoNgfrS9i3g?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BoNgfrS9i3g?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Four Owls album is worth checking for boom bap tings
<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tA16i47I1HM?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tA16i47I1HM?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Low Key for the Immortal Technique/Dead Prez fans
<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z4OI0GUCI_A?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z4OI0GUCI_A?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Kyza & Wretch 32 freestyle
<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/75kwfGFA9Lw?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/75kwfGFA9Lw?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hsf04OXVHUc?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hsf04OXVHUc?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Im not really a Wiley fan either but his influence on grime (and dubstep I guess) is pretty much unparalelled.
<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FKzc385G5wU?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FKzc385G5wU?ve ... n_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

If you want a mix that was really typical of the UK sound in the late 80's/early 90's then check out this Luke Vibert mix.

http://www.mixcloud.com/player/?from_widget=1

Artists like Silver Bullet, Gunshot, Overlord X, Demon Boyz etc. The beats and rapping are fast, very much influenced by the electronic music (acid and jungle) that was popular at the time, combined with influences from ragga and US Bomb Squad-esque hip hop production.

For me, it was definitely the best period for UK rap. Quite distinct to what was happening in the US, and the precursor for Grime.
