Your 10 favorite dirty south albums

Post by Yohan »

Topic says it all. Name your favorite 10 dirty south albums. Of all time, no boundaries, just name 'em. I'm interested to see which way some of you lean. Also wondering if there's anything I've missed.

8Ball & MJG - On Top Of The World
D.E.A. - Screwed For Life
Botany Boyz - Thought Of Many Wayz
Lil' O - My Struggle, My Hustle
Lil' Keke - Don't Mess With Texas
Goodie Mob - Soul Food
ESG - Shinin & Grindin
Fat Pat - Ghetto Dreams
Mista Madd Presents: Supa Thugz
MJG - No More Glory

maybe it's heresy not to include any Outkast or UGK in a list like this, but I don't really listen to them much. probably go for Southernplayalistic... and Too Hard To Swallow if I had to include an album by each one.

This is a solid list. I'd have to go with the following:

Guerilla Maab - Rise
OutKast - ATLiens
Big Tymers - I Got That Work
Goodie Mob - Soul Food
Z-Ro - The Life of Joseph W. McVey
UGK - Super Tight
UGK - Ridin' Dirty
Devin the Dude - The Dude
Dungeon Family - Even in Darkness
Scarface - The Diary

This list would definitely change depending on the day; these are just the first 10 that came to mind.

No order:

Geto Boys - We Can't Be Stopped
Bushwick Bill - Phantom of the Rapra
Outkast - Aquemini
Goodie Mob - Soul Food
UGK - Ridin' Dirty
Mystikal - Mind of Mystikal
Project Pat - Ghetty Green
Evil Pimp - Witness Your Murder
Blac Monks - Secrets of the Hidden Temple
Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation

I think it was catfish who called Ugly Mane's album a classic earlier in the year, and I didn't immediately agree, but as much as liked the album when I first heard it, I like it even more now that I've been listening to it all year. That being said, I'll be the first to admit that I haven't listened to nearly enough southern hip-hop. Working on fixing that.

If you put mystic styles above chapter 2 you are missing the point.

I like Ghetty Green better than every 3-6 album I've heard.

On one hand, The Ghettos Tryin To Kill Me should be disqualified from being classified as a southern album since it's one of the definitive releases from the Richmond, C.A era and was pre-Beats By The Pound.

On the other hand, you can probably make a case for the King George and Rev. Do Wrong-less 1997 reissue with new tracks being a southern classic just off Always Look A Man In The Eyes alone.

Kingpin Skinny Pimp's 'King Of Da Playaz Ball' deserves a mention. I'll make a list later though.
