Albums/Mixtapes Critics Should Hear Before End of Year Lists

Post by B. Ware tha Siniq »

I was thinking about this a little bit this morning as we will probably start to see some end of the year lists crop up by the end of this month. I always wonder if websites or critics even consider some of the most relevant, important, or good releases when making their lists. We're almost done with the year now and what are the mixtapes, albums, EPs that you think critics or websites should absolutely consider before they put a stamp on their end of the year lists? I'll throw mine out there (in no order):

Ka - Grief Pedigree
Future - Pluto
Billy Woods - History Will Absolve Me
Kendrick Lamar - GKMC
ScHoolboy Q - Habits & Contradictions
Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation
Meek Mill - Dreams & Nightmares & Dreamchasers 2
Young L - Enigma Theory
Troy Ave - Bricks In My Backpack vol 3
Tree - Sunday School
SGP - God of Black
Nacho Picasso - Lord of the Fly & Exalted
Mikkey Halsted - MMM Season
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
Illogic & Blockhead - Preparing For Capture 2
El-P - Cancer4Cure
Big K.R.I.T. - Live From the Underground
SL Jones & Burn One - Paraphernalia
Aesop Rock - Skelethon
Nas - I Miss Kelis
Rick Ross - God Forgives, I Don't
Homeboy Sandman - First of a Living Breed
Ethelwulf - The Wolf Gang's Rodolphe
Grandmilly - Bandanas & Black Magic
Chief Keef - Back From the Dead
Lil Reese - Don't Like
Open Mike Eagle - 4NML HSPTL
Ab-Soul - Control System
Roc Marciano - Reloaded
GhostFace Killah - 12 Reasons to Die
Trinidad James - Don't Be S.A.F.E.
Flatbush Zombies - D.R.U.G.S.
J-Green - Fuck Mainstream Codeine Funk
Hit-Boy - HITstory
100s - Ice Cold Perm
Lil Durk - I'm Still A Hitta
iNDEED - iNDEEDFACE
Mr. MFN eXquire - The Man In The High Castle, Power & Passion
Gene The Southern Child & PT - A Ride with the Southern Child
Alchemist - Russian Roulette
Gucci Mane - Trap God
Issue - Waves of Italy
JJ DOOM - Key to the Kuffs
Big Boi - Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors

What else would people throw in that mix of 'rap music that should be heard in 2012'? (yes this is a not-so-thinly veiled did I miss something important this year thread)

Nah... I included a few things that haven't, because I just figured they could be top ten quality product.

Solid list, I'd add

Kristoff Krane's Fanfaronade
2 Chainz's Based on a T.R.U. Story
Check out my FREE album featuring MAC LETHAL, ALASKA from HANGAR 18, HOMEBOY SANDMAN and J57 of the BROWN BAG ALL STARS -

I considered adding 2 Chainz... to me only a couple of tracks had staying power on it, but I guess it's on that deserves to at least be heard. I haven't checked that Kristoff, Kevlaar 7, or the MHz thing yet. I'll give them a listen as well.

Rich Forever could be thrown on there sure... arguably better than his album.

Harsh Reality or whatever the Husalah album is gonna be called.

It was supposed to come out at the end of this year but its like the Bay Area gangsta rap Chinese Democracy, especially if you factor in the average rapper from theres work ethic. I mean hes been rapping since the late 90s and this would technically be his debut, or first he has a hand in releasing anyways.

b-luv recently said hus hasn't been slacking & that he's just being really critical of the tracks he puts on it b/c it'll be his first legit solo he put out himself. i hope that's true

Serengeti- C.A.R.
Ray West- Luv N.Y.

If you put Homeboy Sandman's two EP's from earlier in the year together, you could make another album of the year contender. He even reused a couple of the songs on his LP.

Ace Hood - Starvation

I would also be subject to the initial knee-jerk "Hell no I ain't listening to no Ace fucking Hood mixtape" reaction you're having right now, but surprisingly, he holds down the entire album and has enough depth/ pacing / production to keep it interesting. I also loved him on, "The Drill" off Game's California Republic project.

Whoever will put God Forgives, I Don't and Based on a T.R.U. story on their end year list should retire from writing about rap. Fuck hipster blogs.
Resolved Question
Does Biggie Smalls hate HipHop???

"Shoulda been a cop, Fukc Hiphop"

I've been wondering what he meant by this.
Additional Details
Rap sucks, HipHop is better

Naw, he likes hip hop and rap. He was just referring to if he hadn't started rapping he would've been a cop.
So he's cursing it, not that he doesn't like it, just for the sake of it.

I like my playlist made from the best songs off Foxx's Don't Work, Don't Eat and Foxx Mayweather mixtapes with Send Ya Hit Man and Hit Me Up from $hizz & Foxx's A.D.I.D.A.S 'tape :

$hizz & Foxx w/ a Webbie sample - Send Ya Hit Man

Special shout to the deluxe Karmaloop edition (lol) of IamSu!'s KILT mixtape with the 3 bonus tracks of 211, Break Her Down and HBK Gang's She Ready.

God forgives deserves a mention based on a couple of songs which stand among the best 2012 offered. Ultimately rich forever stands as the better body of work and arguable his most complete project.

Ah, true there were four good songs. Sixteen (Andre not Ross), Amsterdam, Triple beam dreams and Rich forever.
