Today, as MHz Legacy continues to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut album, they're taking part in the tradition of Throwback Thursday with one of the rarest songs from their vaults, "The Only Weathermen Song." The song, accompanied here by new, exclusive artwork, stands apart as a classic from the early 2000s era of hip-hop and marks one of the only times that Copywrite, El-P, Camu Tao, Tage Future, Cannibal Ox, Jakki Da Motamouth, and Yak Ballz (otherwise known as The Weathermen) were all in one studio at the same time.

Reminiscing on the song, Copywrite says:

"Back in 2001, 2002, Camu and I where living in Middletown, New York. Cage lived there too, which is why I moved out there. We where supposed to go on a tour with all of the Eastern Conference Records artists, but Mad Skillz pulled out to vacation, so the tour fell through. Cage wasn't too fond of Camu back then but 'Mu expressed to me how bad he wanted to go to pursue music with me and I told him to come along. In those days, we would always drive my Ford Explorer from Middletown to Manhattan to record at DJ Mighty Mi's spot on Lexington, and then we'd go visit El-P in Brooklyn and crash for several nights at a time. Vast Aire and Vordul Mega, of Cannibal Ox, had their own room downstairs and El's studio was right next door, so there was always music going on."

"This song was recorded around the time I was working on my debut album, The High Exhaulted, and Cannibal Ox was working on their album, The Cold Vein. It was a rare occasion to have Tage Future, Camu Tao, Jakki Da Motamouth, Cage, Cannibal Ox, El-P, and myself all in the same room at once, so I told them we needed to seize the moment and record something. El started pulling up beats and we all instantly agreed on this one. The beat played and we wrote – whoever had their verse first hit the mic booth, which, at that time, was El-P's closet, and the rest is history. Camu was probably smokin' a blunt with Vordul, so neither of them is on the song; I don't know why El didn't drop a verse. Back then we titled it "The Only Weathermen Song," since it was so tough to get all of us together at the same time."

While some of it sounded goofie due to them rapping over mainstream beats, Camu destroyed that Gossip People beat.

I had it on CD and either lost it, sold it to FYE or had it stolen. But yeah, there were some bangers. Cage's verse on the Made You Look remix, that Missy track with Mu and el-p, RJD2's 5 Left in the Clip Remix, Fish with Cage, Tame and Brewin...

Yeah man, most of it didn't age well at all. Besides Cold Vein and Labor Days, I think all of the Eastern Conference and Def Jux from the early 2000's sounds silly today. Even FanDam.

As for the Weathermen mixtape, that's all about Tame 1 and Breezly Brewin to me. Love this track, still listen to it often:

That mixtape has some really nice tracks on it. Fried Fish IIRC being the best.

The OG Weathermen squad disbanding before releasing a "proper" album as well as the Orphanage essentially doing the same were two BIG letdowns from that era.

I was like why does Cage have two verses on this, then I looked up and saw that the first one was Y@k Ballz.

It's my understanding than an entire Orphanage album was recorded, but ultimately everyone involved agreed it didn't live up to anyone involved's standards, so they never pursued releasing it. There's a fair amount of live footage/recordings in circulation that have Orphanage members performing verses and hooks from different songs that were supposed to be on it, and a lot of them sound really dope. "Girls" in particular, based on the Blueprint and Slug live recordings, is a lot of fun.

As for the Weathermen album, when I interviewed El-P earlier this year for Citypages, I asked him about it. He said this:

http://blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/2 ... erview.php
Cancer4Cure survived a publicized 2009 harddrive crash. Other records you were working on around that time, which were reported as close to being finished, included the Weathermen album. Are there any plans for that project to see the light of day?

No, there aren't any plans right now. The thing with something like that is that everyone is their own solo artist and has their own trajectory for their career. I certainly have taken the last few years to really just pull in and like really try to focus on my own shit specifically. That's just kind of what I needed to do.

I dont think either of them were in the crew at that time, Tame for sure was not. Versive is right about Masei though.

This thread made me remember that there is another "full crew" Weathermen track from that era on Def Jux Presents 2..."Same As Never Was"

Masei verse was great... Love the Cammy "two bare minds" line.

I dont think Sage was ever actually in the crew, he just appeared on that freestyle session called "Orphanage Freestyle" or whatever.

A few Orphanage tracks have surfaced on some of Print's releases in the years since..."Obsolete", "Hold Mine" and "Soap"

The best Weathermen song to my memory was the remix of "Dead Disnee" titled "Dead Weathermen." It had the most style imo
