Behind the Scenes Hip-Hop Innovators

Post by Jedisdope »

I'm planning to create a video series for YouTube about behind the scenes innovators of hip-hop. Each episode would be an interview / mini doc focused on one of the icons. I'm creating a list of people to contact and wanted to see if the rap history gawds at philaflava had any suggestions. thank you.

Ive heard a lot about Paul C over the years but never really "got" his contribution. Id be interested in seeing a ep on him.

Paul C innovated a production style that included chopping up samples and resequencing them. Before him, most rap consisted of breakbeats looped by hand on turntables, or through a sequencer, with some other breakbeats laid over them and/or added at the hook to mix it up. Paul C took those breakbeats and chopped them up on the SP-12 and SP-1200 to create new melodies and percussion.
Large Professor was his protege and, legend has it, he taught Pete Rock the technique. Arguably, all hip-hop in the 90s was produced this way, so it's safe to say Paul C had an impact. He is also the uncredited producer or co-producer on many countless classic songs. And he had a stupid haircut.
His legend was certainly cemented by his untimely, violent death. As far as I'm concerned, there can't be enough documentaries, books, and movies about the guy (and aside from an amazing article by Dave Tompkins, I don't believe there is anything)

Yes, that's the idea. I want to try to talk to people who weren't rappers or producers but were still influential in hip-hop to some extent and then create short video pieces that profile them.

I've begun to hit up A&Rs, engineers, video directors, managers, photographers, etc.

The book The Big Payback certainly opened my eyes to a lot of this stuff, especially Lyor Cohen, Bill Stephney and Irv Gotti. Also had a lot of stuff I didn't know about the more well-known influencers

Not sure if this counts as "behind the scenes" but Mike Dean definitely made a huge impact without most people knowing anything about him.

There's alot of people that arent really influential but probably got some great stories, for example

Charlie Mack https://twitter.com/firstoutdalimo

Twitter is pretty great for hitting up randoms like this. Chubb Rock's wife is on there FFS https://twitter.com/WivesofHipHop01

dudes like Bill Stephney (Public Enemy/Def Jam) , Jorge Hinojosa (Ice T's manager) and Divine or Power (Wu Tang) would be really interesting to talk to and probably give you a more honest account of events being that they dont have the ego most artists have.

I realize this is kind of an aside, but I'd appreciate if you could ask Bob what beat machine(s) Tip was using for the first 3 Tribe albums. I've read both the SP-1200 and the EPS but never from anyone reputable.

Thanks!
