THE UNFLIPPABLES (sample exchange thread)

Post by CHANCE RANDOM »

YO! I'm trying to come up with some interesting thread ideas to breathe some more life into the Sound Lab. This is thread number one.

Do you have a sample that no matter what you do, you just can't flip? Or a sample you've flipped but want to see how other beat makers fuck with it? Drop 'em here.

This is a track called Penicillin Penny from a group named Dr. Hook. I think I sampled it at -10% pitch on my table. The guitar riff at the beginning always caught my ear but I've never been able to chop it into anything I like. What can y'all do?

i don't know the only way i hear something is if you did like a old school big daddy kane beat.. i wouldn't try and chop the sample up except maybe the part with the sliding guitar you might be able to do something with that and make more of a wu tang beat.. let's see i'll try and actually do what i described in a bit..

yeah this is a rush job i just used the big daddy kane drums for raw matter of fact but you could swap those out for some harder drums with similar feel..

i'm not sure about something more modern sounding.. cool thread idea though .. i got one haha..

this track just has so much energy there's got to be a good sample in it.. it's 3/4 though so it's kinda tricky.. i tried chopping it up to get those low horns but it really wasn't that great.. keep coming back to it though..

Yeah I took the easy route with that one. I'll be using it some more for sure.

^^ that's definitely a tricky one as far as my skill set goes cause i'd have a hard time getting around those already prominent drums.. or it would take me a while to figure out how to make them hit harder. i might try to sample the middle part actually the doo doo doo part..

Nah, RJ sampled a group called Pure Essence for that one. Pretty straight loop jack of it too.

been on here for a while and i don't think i've been in this forum until last week. i guess i never scrolled down far enough... checked out some of the stuff on here and was enjoying more than i expected. i'm not sure why i had such low expectations. the internet in general, perhaps. anyways, just started making beats but i may try to join the next beat battle. i liked the format from what i saw and the beats that were still posted.

i tried to mess with the dr hook song above. needed raps and so i did this, raps and instrumental:

 much appreciated. yeah i know what you mean. bought a maschine like 8 months ago and used it ton for a month or two. then i got busy and didn't end up picking it back up until a few weeks ago. today i listened to some of the first stuff i did and the chops are crazy. they're mostly awful, but i like a few of them and i definitely wouldn't think to do em like that now

I've been letting this beat dwell in my cabinet, not really knowing what to do with it, figuring I'll leave it alone and return to it with fresh ears and an initiative to add or change something, never do either of those things, and then just close the session again. So what the hell, hear it is. The moment I played the clip, I started flipping it, and this is more or less the same beat as the draft I started weeks ago.

This right here is super tough, I like it better without hearing Mos wax poetic on it.

 thanks man. a friend of mine asked how one would go about rapping on it and that was the first decent acapella i could find that was the same tempo

Ripped it off Youtube. What's the difference these days? Drown it in details, and it's all the same.

yeah i think it depends on what you do with the sample. for the most part you're right, it doesn't make a difference. but i have gotten a slight buzz on some stuff i ripped from youtube. if you use the sample as is or just change the pitch slightly it can sometimes be noticable. or maybe i'm just being paranoid...
