I think Jackas especially poor performance lately might just be down to his diet, weed turns you to a jabba if youre not careful. Like some of his actual bars are still nice theyre just hobbled by all the 3am lasagna and dorito sandwiches.

But on the other hand most quality rappers only have about 5-10 good years. Perhaps he just falls in to that category, like every good rapper. If it wasn't for lean he might still have lost all the energy in his flow, most rappers phone it in by the time theyre on their third album and Jacka was spreading himself very thin (nh) in the last half of last decade. Hes probably jsut trying to put out a bunch of stuff before retiring.

Ill never understand how so many rappers with distinctive/unique signature flows go so bland/robotic late in life. Like I understand not being inspired to write decent lyrics/come up with new styles but if youre still going to the effort of having a music career and dont have to pause for breath going up stairs, at the very least try and copy your old delivery ffs. MOP one obvious exception cos of course thars not sustainable.

I've thought about that often, actually. My theory may be a bit pseudo-philosophical, but sounding like a young, hungry MC probably isn't something you can fake. Your mindset is reflected in your voice + people's voices and the way they talk tends to get deeper and slower when getting older. It's only more apparent with people who rap slow like Snoop and Jacka. Someone like Nas can still sound intense because he raps fast with multis. Scarface is one of the few old guys who doesn't seem to age on the mic but there's only a small handful imo.



Songs like this makes it sound as if Jacka had a lobotomy if you compare it to now.

Nah thats very likely, especially in Jacka's case. Hunger and energy are one thing and I dont think its ever conscious really but youd think even someone like E-40, who clearly had no problem maintaining a high standard longer than basically anyone and prided himself on being "unorthodox", still started gradually toeing the line from the early 00s on. hes still not exactly in the pocket even now but his whole thing was having a hundred styles in the one song and it subsided despite still making an effort.

I think a bigger part of it might not be being jaded in general but more jaded with the specific proccess of recording songs, like its your 9-5 and youre so familiar with how it goes you do it by rote by a certain point and its probably too taxing to stray.

I think the first time it really struck me was either Kokane after Funk Upon A Rhyme or 00s Raekwon. It just felt so unnecessary/frustrating.
