Jonwayne (Stones Throw)

Out of all the artists on here, I’d argue that Stones Throw Records rapper-producer Jonwayne is the one you probably already know. But that’s OK, because if you are familiar with him, hopefully this will serve as a reminder to play his music today, tomorrow, and so on. That sentiment is especially relevant seeing how he recently released (July 30) a fantastic new project, Cassette 3: The Marion Morrison Mixtape, that’s his strongest effort to date.

Marion Morrison is contemplative, visceral, and lyrically nimble while maintaining the purity of a traditional rap mixtape. He jacks a few beats from the likes of Don Cannon, Madlib, and J Dilla, all of which serve a clearly stated purpose. On “Numbers on the Hoard”, for example, Jonwayne lifts Cannon’s beat from Pusha T‘s “Numbers on the Board” and makes it his own with braggadocious rhymes spit through gritted teeth. Elsewhere, the multi-talented artist delivers one of the year’s strongest songs with “Altitude”. Backed by his and Mndsgn‘s dreamy production, Jonwayne allows a meditative glimpse into his brain and outlook on life. It’s honest, thoughtful and altogether refreshing, much like the remainder of Marion Morrison.—Andrew Martin

for some reason I can't get into this dude, despite teh fact that he's clearly talented, makes music that's generally up my alley and collaborates with other artists I like. it just never connects with me, not sure why

Agree w/ Drizz more or less, I like his beats, but have never been able to get into his raps. I cringe when people compare him to DOOM.

i agree, there's no comparison. i feel like he wants to be DOOM though. both his delivery and the way he structures his rhymes is similar

I think he's pretty good. I hear the doom comparisons. Obviously an influence.

Pre-Cassette 3 I'd agree with Drizzle and Bengi but I think he stepped his game up on his latest tape. I agree that the DOOM comparisons don't help his cause - especially when he invites the comparisons himself. Despite that, Cassette 3 is in my top 10 for the year so far.

best track i've heard so far. i actually like his live versions better than the album version, even his voice performing live. such an ill beat though.

i saw him and mount kimbie last week. it was a good show. the non-rap crowd enjoyed his set heavily. he did a rap during mount kimbie's set, also.
plus, i copped all three cassettes.

any one listen to the album yet? it's out today. about half way through and i'm enjoying it so far. seems like he's moved past biting DOOM

and wicked, wayne posted a thread about him from ughh.com's forum to his facebook page and said "This is why I try not to google myself anymore. Everything that's wrong with music culture, let alone hip hop, is presented here" Thoughts?

I like it but think I prefer the last Cassette mixtape.

 at Wicked getting called out as being "everything that's wrong with music culture, let alone hip hop".
